anybody know much about dang vw motors?
gotta do a timing belt on a 1999.5 jetta 2.0. people keep telling me that it's not like any other vehicle, but i think they might be full of manure. any help would be great.

it has a thermo roller tensioner and pretty specific tricks to setting up the timing marks. if you've never messed with those motors before i dont suggest going in blind. ive had to tear a few down before because some backyard mechanics thought they knew what they were doing and ended up damaging valves. so a routine timing job turns into a very expensive head job.
if you want, i can give you service writeup on how to do it, correctly.

Really the hardest part of that timing belt is ordering the new pas side tranny mount bolts since it has to be removed and they should be replaced every time.
Just line the cam sprocket mark to the one on the head remove the mount slip the belt off and new one on. The tensioner there is a special tool that i have since i've done 7 of these belts so far for friends but it's not that hard maybe takes 4 hours if you don't rush.
And while your in there you should do the water pump cause if you don't and the pump goes you have to pull the belt again to replace it.
And i am a water cooled vw guy myself i love em

Here is a site they sell german parts and this will be a crap load cheaper than a dealer and autozone
Plus the water pump they sell have a metal impeller and not the stupid plastic ones that Vw used that shear off the shaft or just explode
http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volks...a/Engine/290/7
like 5th item down it's under tensioner tool this is what is supposed to be used but the first time i did one i used needle nose pliers with the curve in them. And it's been 60K since i did that so it does work in a pinch
