I try no to limit myself by MFG. Instead what I do is look at what I'm looking for, both in price and "style" (truck, SUV, sedan, sports car, etc).
For example, right now I've got a 1992 Ford F150 w/ the 4.9L straight 6. She's older, getting a bit tired, and should be replaced.
My fiance and I are looking for a full size truck to replace it with. I'm not limiting myself to Ford or Chevy. I'll take anything large enough to safely pull heavy loads, but it has to be auto (easier for the lady friend), lowER miles, and decent looking. I don't need a rusty dented beat up old truck. Thats what my XJ is for!
Anyway, this is what my suggestion is. If you take your time and actually look at vehicles you'll find something that works well for you.

That is a tough call. They all have their issues. They each have advantages over each other for sure. In the long run I might have to go with Ford though, just not a diesel. Their new ecoboost F-150 will be interesting, 11,000 lbs towing capacity out of a twin-turbo V6 that makes more torque than the new raptor 6.2L V8 engine. And much better fuel mileage when just driving around normally...
