Gonna buy a ford 390 off a friend of mine, for scrap price, it's out of a 68 f100 stepside. Is it worth building up?

for one, it is a pre 1970 block before the fuel crisis, so should have the steel crank and higher horsepower. no early emission crap.

and it is an FE block. fords smaller big block.

btw, this is a killer engine when built up.

i could get into the HP and Torque thing, but with past experience about big block/small block, i will refrain. this should give you an idea.

cool. not sure whether its a dual carbed on either. but hes swapping in a 302 instead. What would you think of boring it out? Cause either way i want to send it to a machine shop and get it redone so to say.

i know with the FE's you could take a 352 and put 428 stuff on it and it will bolt right up. manifolds, fuel pump etc. good sounding motors im just not a fan because every one ive worked on has been a piecer.

I have bought many trucks over the years with various FE blocks and replaced all of them with 429 or 460s.

Me?

If so I'll say this.....

I wouldn't say it is a bad engine, just not one I prefer. I have run 385 blocks (429/460) for years in race cars and know how them like the back of my hand.

The bigger question is what application is destined for the 390 the OP is asking about.

If not directed at me then "Never mind" (In my best Rosanne Rosanna Danna voice).

I'm not sure what it will go in, I may just put it on a stand and run it time to time, or I may swap it in a jeep, or a dune buggy lmao

if you want to race, go with the 460 block.
if you want nice street horsepower, than the 390 block is perfect.
they used them in the taledaga and the cyclones. great platform in my opinion.

Moved to the Other Vehicles section.

If you get it for a good price it'll be perfect.
