I am sticking with a 4-stroke... because all I have to do is throw gas in and ride.... and change the oil every so often... I am not a huge fan of having to carry different types of gas around with me for different toys and such... especially because eventually I want to get a 4-stroke quad.... so I don't want to have to have two different tanks of gas if I take them both out for a weekend of fun... But that is just me... and not to mention 4-strokes are not that hard to work on really...

depending on your size you may want to look into the honda crf250x or 450x. These bikes make good power. The 450 is almost to much lol. If you get the 250x the best thing you can do is suspension revalving ( rg3 devol and mb1 are great suspensionIST)
Both bikes come with electric start, kick stands, and a really really weak headlight, and tail light.

You can also mod these bikes by lettin' them breathe and re- jetting the carb (jd jetting is always my favorite) and you have yourself on heck of a ride. You can pick up the 04's by me for 2500 to 3000 all day and sometimes cheapier.

( I love my 250x, she is set up for intense enduro racing though.)
good website for honda dirtbike info: crfsonly.com

When you compare 2 stroke vs 4 stroke, The 2 stroke makes more HP per CC while the 4 stroke will kill it in torque. The newest Yamaha Yz250 puts out 41hp while the yz250f puts out 36.4hp, so the difference isn't to big but 2 stroke is more power per CC
2 strokes can be one great trail bike if you ride them well. But overall the 4 stroke is better on the trails. If you ever go for dunes though the 2 strokes own

4 stroke dirt bikes get great torque from idle on up and are great trail bikes. They are very popular since they have a lot of torque. They do not require you to mix oil and gas, and they are not as finniky with outside air temp and mods. With the option of fuel injection and electric start it is pretty convenient. The experience will go something like this. rev and let out the clutch.... smooth torque and acceleration pulling hard through the gears...

2 stroke bikes operate mostly in their power band. They don't have much torque in the low revs. They are much simpler then the 4 stroke motor in that there is no valve train. They are also cheaper to build up. most times overhaul is new rings and some gaskets. The carb may need to be adjusted depending on the heat and humidity. Otherwise it can run like crap... Newer engines get around this though with newer carb designs. The experience will go something like this. rev and let out the clutch.... a little bit of spudder and bogging until it catches and smoothly accelerates until the power valve opens.... it is like an explosion of power that you can keep WOT while zipping through the gears...
You said it perfect. I have been riding since I was 5 and have thrown my leg over just about everything. This is really going to come down to OP's riding ability and style. If you want to do an unexpected wheelie in 4th doing 50 mph get a big 2 stroke. If you want a smooth controllable ride get a 250f. On a side note I would love to see a 4 stroke(I own all 4ts now so I am no fan boy) hang with the '96 kx500 I use to have. That thing was the devil's spawn!

Transworld mx did a comparising of (the bad boy lol) crf450r vs the cr500. The 500 made more power of course.... but they all put in faster lap times on the 450. They said the 500 was too much to handle. Makes me wonder how my friend eddie could rock his cr500 but struggle's controlling his 450. The answer: it really depends on the rider's style.

The 2 stroke makes slightly more hp per cc, but onces again people don't race 2 stroke 250's agianst 4 stroke 250's but thumper 450's.
250f's make great power and have plenty for the woods.

2 strokes do 2 cycles and 4 stroke's do 4 cycles (seroiusley if you know what I mean. comparing cycle and cc to one and another doesn't show much imo)

4 stroke;
1st stroke-Intake-pulls air/fuel into cylinder
2nd stroke-compression-compresses air/fuel creating pressure
3rd stoke-power-explosion of air/fuel
4th stroke-exhaust-pretty self explanitory-exhaust forced out of valves
A 2 stroke combines the whole process into 2 strokes, thats why they can rev so high for so long. There is simply less going on.

I've been fortunate to have done tons of test rides. Ranging from exotic Aprillias to the American Christini. The 4stroke 2stroke debate is and always has been a huge debate. The major jap bikes of ALL dumper there 2 stroke line up. If any still produce it, it recives few if any mods from yr to yr. 4stroke is all the rage now.

The benifits of 2 strokes are, light weight and cheap to work on.

The benifit of a 4stroke is reliablilty and predictable power band.

At your weight and height i would recomend a 125 2stroke or a 250 4 stoke.
Having grown up on 4 strokes the only thing i dislike is the weight.
I have riden 2 strokes and been happy with them but what i dislike about them is their anoying tone and constant maintance.

Either way a cr125 or a crf250x and you wont go wrong. It depends on your price range but if KTM is in your range, go orange. I love mine. Hope I helped.

I completely agree with the above poster! KTM is the way to go bro! They make a wide variety of bikes that are designed for enduro riding. Excellent in both 2 strokes and 4 strokes. I previously rode a 2 stroke rm 250 and loved it. But once i turned orange and went with the KTM 520, I'll never go back to a 2 stroke. And i do TONS of trail riding. If i raced more i would go for the 450, but i do quite a bit of hill climbing too so i need that extra power But its really up to you and your riding power. And yes, there are certain bikes that are designed for a more experienced rider. I would definately not reccommend anybody just jumping on my 520 and taking off! It could end up a very very bad day for them!

i own a 05 yz 250 2 stroke. the problem i see with the four strokes is the ones for racing have flatter pistons that like to turn sideways if not kept up properly. many people are switching back to two strokes, because they are very cheap and easy to rebuild. i enjoyed watching motocross much more when it was mainly 2 strokes because the riders had to push themselves harder. it was more of a battle of who could hold on to the bike. but i do also love four strokes, i just cant afford to rebuild one if the motor blows. a lot of times they take out the bottom end as well when they go and then your talking about 2 to 3 grand to rebuild the entire thing. i also ride lots of desert, trail riding, and hill climbing. my bike is bored out to a 290 and is stroked. very hard to hold on to. i blow away a lot of the four strokes trail riding and on the track. i guess like everyone else said, it really depends on the rider

got 200+hrs of hard trail abuse on my thumper. EXC 400. thumpers are more costly to maintain the motor but the motor needs far less maintance. Valves adjusted every couple years depending on rev abuse. change the oil clean the air filter and u got a dependable bike that isn't super agresive and dont have to deal with the gas mix. Let us know what you get!

You want a four stroke. Two strokes are a lot of work in trails. This guy is spot on. It's a tried and true motor. They've been around a while and are trouble free. I grew up being a honda fan, honda makes great reliable motors, but Suzuki nailed it with the Z400.

They also have lights, which two strokes typically do not.

Did I mention that you can pop over to DMV and be street legal? Ride the bike to the trail?
