If you are looking to tow then get a cummins of any year really... just avoid late 90's to early 00's as they have transmission issue's in the auto's. If you are looking for mileage then you should consider late gen 6.2's and late gen 6.5's. They are by no means powerhouses but are really good on fuel and fairly reliable when maintained. As it was stated stay away from the 6.0 and 6.4 Fords. Nothing but trouble with them. The 7.3's are good unless you want to start modifying it. Then you will run out of money before you even start to see the gains that you want. You will also be limited in the fuel area running the stock injector pump system.
The Duramax's are good but the first two years had issues. In 03 they got a lot better. Just remember that you can toast the allison trans in the GM's if you get above 650 lb's of torque. If you upgrade the internals that trans will take almost anything that you throw at it. Biggest thing is to look for a good truck that was maintained right and not abused. Hope this helps you.

Ok that doesn't make sense. Anyway ALL year dodge diesels use the same transmission with some very minor differences. They are excellent units with a couple flaws. Chrysler decided to use a piece of junk converter in them to keep the power at the wheels down at low speed. On that note Chrysler software I proprietary also and dreaded the torque 200 lbft over factory cummins spec.
Anyway. With a good converter and valve body these trannys hold up great. Better than the allisons actualy.
Just ask me how I know.........
If you do end up looking at anything cummins powered and have any questions let me know. I worked for cummins. Ran a tranny shop, now operate my own specializing in Chrysler trannys specifically dodge diesels, (dannymacracingtransmission) and have year of experience with the dodge trucks including my own and many others

I had an 06 2500 and last year bought a new one - 2010 3500 with the 6.7 CTD.
Love my new truck, but with the new quad cab and 8' bed it really is hard to find a parking lot big enough for it, much less an actual parking spot! I always end up with a nice long walk. :-)
