I'm not trying to thread jack but are these fairly easy to work on and are parts ridiculous? I'm really liking these.

Working on them isnt real hard but you better do your research about the vr6 first. They are a very unique motor but if taken care of can require very little maintenance and last a long time. Parts can be can be a little pricey but if you shop around you can find a good deal. Biggest issue i had was mine is the coil pack had hairline cracks in it and whenever it rained it would cause the car to misfire but all i had to do was replace it. A good site to check out is vwvortex.com

Heres a link to there forum http://forums.vwvortex.com/forumdisp...001-Volkswagen

Yeah, the VR6 is/was awesome. I chimed in the 8v 4cyl because of cost and ease to work on.

I'm a big fan of the Saturn S-Cars (SL, SW, SC, etc.) Those 1.9L 4 cylinders are awesome as well with highly dependable auto AND manual transmission options. MPG for parents auto '02 is 40 MPG average. Easy to work on if you're into working on your own car.

What about the parts availability? I might have to start saving up for a car that gets decent fuel economy. The prospect of insuring and maintaining two vehicles is scary, though..

I've had the best luck with a 1996 Toyota Corolla, goofy looking little car but super dependable. Worst mistake of my life was selling that to my step bro, and buying a 1995 Dodge Ram. I wish I could go back and slap myself and say no!!!!!

Yeah go with an mk4 jetta with either the vr6 or 1.8t, those two cars will beat any others metioned here in stock form. plus with the 1.8t a simple tune will push the boost up to like 20 psi and you really fly.
this is my old one i traded for the jeep, it was a 1.8t with a custom catback and a MBC pushing like 12 psi, Ricers hated me I ride right on the side of them till like 60 then down shift and say bye bye.

Just my experience, every Jetta I've ever seen or known people to have has been a huge piece of ****. I wouldn't waste my money on one of those for sure.

These cars are kind of hard to find, but it has been a great car to me and it is very easy to work on. I got it for 1200 bucks. 1990 Mazda 626LX. Any 1988-1992 Mazda MX6 or 626 will be a good car to you, and some of them come in the turbo variety (although very hard to find a 626 with turbo). I got lucky with this one, was owned by a granny and only had 95,000 miles on it. I'm up to 124k now and drive it daily. Gets around 24mpg average. If you can find ethanol-free gas, you could get up to 31mpg on these cars.

No doubt but that can be said about every car. Those that are POS's tend to be beaten to **** there whole life them thrown off the some uneducated buyer that has no idea what to look for when buying. My jetta ran great. I would keep up and sometimes beat the 4.8 mustangs, only reason I got rid of it was because tickets are really expencive and I got arrested racing at like 130 on the highway. But i really looked around for mine. The support for them in the aftermarket world is just as big as civics, but they look some much better, and the euro scene is where its at. I fully intent on buying another mk4 but probably a r32 for the awd and bigger motor. that paired with a biturbo turbo and Ill blow the doors off sti's and evo's

Maybe turbo one day, gotta stiffen the chassis, maybe lower it slightly. Make the body look better or at least fix the rusted rockers. Get a header that fits lol the one I ordered was too short. For now I'm pretty happy, runs and drives awesome, can actually drive on the highway unlike my jeep and gets 30 ish mpg rather than 9 in the XJ
