Snow recovery
How many of you gusy that live up north use your jeeps to pull people that have spun out or just stuck in the winter? Do you think its safe?
I only do it if they have a recovery hook or tab.
any thoughts?

I know a couple dudes w/ 4x4's that drive around looking for folks that are stuck so they can charge them to pull them out during snow storms. I personally couldn't do that...and have pulled several unfortunate souls out of some rough spots during storms.

I will pull someone out if they are ditch and its not hazardous to do so. But charging is a HUGE no-no... That's a crime here called trolling and the cops are VERY happy to nail you for it...
I had a situation once where the road was VERY hazardous conditions and I was in 4wd on it. An Explorer flew past me at about 40mph(I was doing about 15 mph at the time). I get over a hill and around the curve, here is the Explorer off the road about 20 foot and up against a fence. I pulled over and pulled out my winch controller and a hook-up chain. I walked to the edge of the road and asked the driver if he needed a pull-out. He said "yeah, and hurry up I got places to go". I yelled back.... "okay, I'll call you a tow when I get to town"......... I got back in the Jeep and drove away....

Pulling out a vehicle that isn't in the snow too far is plenty safe. Just make sure you set up some 'ground rules' for the pullout. As for pulling out the vehicle itself, it's safe to do by a tow point or a hitch if they have one equipped; just make sure you get the line taught before you start pulling. I carry two straps: one is my recovery recovery strap (used for wheeling and stuff like that when someone gets REALLY stuck.) and the other I call my honda snow strap. The snow strap has some hooks on the end and it's a little quicker to use for just a basic pullout like that. If you're worried about them driving off with your tow strap or something like that, maybe voice your concern and ask for some collateral in return. I would not charge them, but I'm nice like that.
My story: When I was over at my friend's house, I got a call that two of my other friends were stuck over in the snow down the street a ways. I go down over there to find her toyota camry nose-first in a ditch about 3ft deep, completely flustered and glaring at the guy she was driving. Apparently he had wanted to drift and didn't tell her, so he just pulled the e-brake, sending the car sliding over into the ditch. Came right out with a gentle tug.

Yeah I only pull people out id they have a good tow point like the hondas are great cause they have a little hook type thing below the back bumper.
I have a hitch with a D shackle reciever it stuck the "honda strap" thru it so i dont have to use the hook on my end. then i just hook up and pull gently and see how stuck they are and tug a little if needed.

I have a few snow pics in my album. We have pulled many people out. Never charge though. One time I pulled a guys old Buick bumper right off. He was cool with it but I did feel bad. My brother has a 99 Tacoma. A couple christmas' ago he came to visit. Didn't show for about three hours so I took the xj I had at the time out and there he was in a 4' snow drift(Buried). A Huge Suburban and a couple others had tried to pull him out to no luck. My Cherokee drove in to him, stayed on top of the snow, and pulled him out without even the thought of falling through. I just love jeeps for that reason.

NEVER PULL OUT A PASSENGER VEHICLE BY A BUMPER!!! 99.9% of vehicles have stock tow mounts, both front and back. These are designed for either using the tow-behind trucks or the flatbed tow trucks to be able to chain them down. They are safe to pull a snow-stuck vehicle out by.

I'd pull anyone out if they have a secure spot on the frame to tie off to. I wouldn't charge either just not my style. Then again here in oklahoma we don't get enough snow for anything major anyways. I do remember a year when we got a ton of snow when I was about 15 and my neighbor has a CJ and I went around with him pulling folks out. He did just for something to do and never charged. I figure it depends on the individual and your situation on charging. Someone like Nick for example isn't working so charging a small fee is understandable, but if you don't need money just do it and be a good citizen..
