When I lived in snow country I would pull folks out and never charged them. I always told them that now they wrre obligated to help someone broken down on the side of the road at sometime in the near future. All agreed to do that.
I found the cast T device with a big ring that hooks into the frame on flatbed tow trucks. It has been helpful for a secure place on several vehicles. Like these. http://www.hookswreckersupplies.com/...&productId=339

NEVER PULL OUT A PASSENGER VEHICLE BY A BUMPER!!! 99.9% of vehicles have stock tow mounts, both front and back. These are designed for either using the tow-behind trucks or the flatbed tow trucks to be able to chain them down. They are safe to pull a snow-stuck vehicle out by.

I don't think I was very specific about the situation. I NEVER(that was the only time) pull anyone by the bumper. This guys was high centered in about three to four feet of a snow drift that ran for about 40 or 50 yards. He was in the middle of the road and that was the only way out. We lived in the sticks. He did not have any points on the rear of his pos that were attached to the frame. -Because we had ripped them off-. He was STUCK, he really should have waited til monday so the plow could go through. Just so you know, it was his idea to hook to the bumper. I did warn him of what would happen. Just so ya know.

i have pulled only 1 car out, i was in my dads suburban and this girl had slid into a ditch. it was no problem, i didnt get paid but i got her number

this winter, i helped my friends out by driving them to work(mine was closed)... i drove a friend and his wife into her works parking lot, the road had been plowed up to but the parking lot was not. apparently everyone now thought they were capable of the same thing, and the lot quickly filled up with stuck cars, and two wheel drive trucks... i didnt charge but was given some $20 bills(she worked at a bank) and while pulling a volkswagon out by the rear tow hook, the front bumper dug in and ripped off... the guy was cool about it, but i felt kinda bad, i didnt expect that to happen. i dont think its illegal, but i dont know how much it mattered since i wasn on the road.

But seriously, don't charge...just not jeeping nature. In colorado, there are several laws in place protecting people who offer help in situations like these. One is verbal contracts are considered a legal binding, so if you say you are not responsible for any damage to their vehicle and they agree, you're "safe." On top of that, colorado also has some "good samaritan" laws that protect people who offer their help from lawsuits and legal charges. Go CO.
Most embarrasing stuck of my life: I was playing around in the mall parking lot a couple weeks ago, playing on the piles the plows left behind that had iced over by this point. My front wheels broke the ice on the edge of the pile and I fell down and got hung up on my diffo. Luckily, someone behind me with a new jeep (liberty, I think?) was just coming out and was able to pull my ebarassed ***** out.

I was trying to figure out if the whole idea of this thread was pulling people out in general or pulling people out on the side of the highway. In Minnesota it is highly illegal to pull someone out on the main road w/o all the fancy safety lights that tow trucks got. well only if you get caught....

i used to drive for CAA during the winter months. mainly did recovery.
i have one of those hook clusters that i use in my jeep.
i use a large d shackle to attach it to my strap.
on my cluster, i have a t hook and a mini J. i think there is another, but can't remember, i only use those 2.
there are special reinforced holes in the frame of every vehicle. some are oval while others are just round. most are between the front and rear wheels (on most domestics) and imports have em closer to the bumpers.
whatever you do, DON'T use the little wire hoops you see attached to the bottom of the spare tire cell. those are barely just glued on with some hardening compound of some sort. if that doesn't pull off, then most likely the rust around it will.
soon to add to my kit will be a synthetic V strap with t hooks and mini J, also from flatbed tow truck.
be careful who and how you pull people out. you can be held responsible for any damages.
and NEVER block the road to pull anyone out without the cops there to block traffic. however, the cops don't like it, unless you're in a tow truck.
be safe, lots can go wrong.
