on my cluster, i have a t hook and a mini J. i think there is another, but can't remember, i only use those 2.

there are special reinforced holes in the frame of every vehicle. some are oval while others are just round. most are between the front and rear wheels (on most domestics) and imports have em closer to the bumpers.

whatever you do, DON'T use the little wire hoops you see attached to the bottom of the spare tire cell. those are barely just glued on with some hardening compound of some sort. if that doesn't pull off, then most likely the rust around it will.

soon to add to my kit will be a synthetic V strap with t hooks and mini J, also from flatbed tow truck.

be careful who and how you pull people out. you can be held responsible for any damages.

and NEVER block the road to pull anyone out without the cops there to block traffic. however, the cops don't like it, unless you're in a tow truck.

be safe, lots can go wrong.

you make some very good points thanks

If you really are worried about the liability issue, you could either write up a little page or type up a little page that would say something to the effect of "I, ________, hereby accept full liability and responsibility for any damages resulting from the recovery of my vehicle by (your name here)."

And then make them sign it. It seems dumb, but it is essentially a very short contract. Probably enough to dig you out of a civil suit.

Up here, roads get real icy, blowing snow causes conditions too change real quick. I have yet too pull someone out, but I and many others stop too see if the person[s] is ok. most people have cell phones and already are calling for a tow. if they need a ride, i always offer, cause one day i may need some help. Had a person drive into a shallow ditch, just barely in, we offered too help, she declined, no problem, tow truck was already on the way, but she was not prepared for these conditions. no winter clothes at all! no boots/gloves, nothing. carry at least a blanket and a candle. shovels work wonders as well.

I carry a shovel, tow strap, recovery strap, spare fluids, a full size spare, and a winter quality coat. Winter conditions change fast here. When I drive in more rural and mountain areas, I add magnesium flares, chains (they don't fit but they can help Unstuck), and a good amount of water to that list. If you're well prepared, being left afoot is a mere inconvenience.

That particular loop is there for when the car is transported. It is meant as a secure point to tie the vehicle down and not as a spot for recovery.

The person doing the pulling is just as stupid though.. The car would have been an easy pull off the snow bank and back onto the pavement. But instead they chose to pull it further into the snow...

I had a situation once where the road was VERY hazardous conditions and I was in 4wd on it. An Explorer flew past me at about 40mph(I was doing about 15 mph at the time). I get over a hill and around the curve, here is the Explorer off the road about 20 foot and up against a fence. I pulled over and pulled out my winch controller and a hook-up chain. I walked to the edge of the road and asked the driver if he needed a pull-out. He said "yeah, and hurry up I got places to go". I yelled back.... "okay, I'll call you a tow when I get to town"......... I got back in the Jeep and drove away....

thats effin awesome man dont you hate it when you are being nice and people are being rude as hell

so far this winter ive pulled three people out.

1) a little red toyota front wheel drive. she was going to fast and bumped a tree. i had no rear recovery at this point so i wrapped the strap around my shackle. in which case if there was too much stress the strap would unravel letting my suspension free. pulled her out with ease

2) I got a call about 7 in the morning from my dad saying that my mom had lost control and put her car into the ditch on the road outside of our neighborhood. (brand new 2008 Infiniti G37S - why she was driving in the snow, i dunno... with still no rear recovery i pulled her out using my front bumper (i know recoveries in reverse arent the way to go, but i did it as a last resort).

3) two guys lost control in a dodge pickup on the highway. i saw them as i was driving over the overpass. went down to the highway, the wrong direction, went through the median to turn around, asked if they needed help. they said they were from terre haute and they lost control. there 4wd didnt work. so i put my recovery strap on and yanked em out real quick, guy handed my 15 bucks and said, heres all i have, we appreciate it.

that same storm i called into the hospital and asked if there were nurses that couldnt get into work. (a normal thing to do when i lived in MD, not so much in IN lol) so i picked up this one guy, no roads had been plowed with a foot of snow on the ground and more still falling. picked up and older lady as well. it was pretty awesome being the only truck on the road, going places that the plow trucks couldnt get to at that time

I live in the mountians of NOR CAL , I usually pull 10 to 15 people out a year in my XJ , I do not charge but have gotten some great home made cookies in exchange and once a home cooked meal for my whole family. Just keep in mind you never know when you could be stuck and need help , no matter how Bad A%^ your rig is you can and will get stuck.
