They're usually really good reliable vehicles. If you know how to check trans fluid and oil just take a look before you buy it, make sure it looks decent. Other than that, if it seems to run and drive good i'd say go for it, just be ready for worse gas mileage.

the impala is a good car with few common problems. if it runs good and you would trust it on a cross country drive tomorrow, then keep that in mind.

the jeep grand cherokee is a solid platform that has some common problems, but nothing that isn't too hard to fix when needed.

is the jeep a 6cyl or 8? is it full time 4 wheel drive, or does it have 2 wheel drive option. this will play a critical part in fuel mileage, as jeeps don't get great mileage to begin with.

all around, make your decision with visual condition, but take it to a mechanic to have him do a pre-safety inspection to let you know what needs to be replaced/addressed.

good luck with your decision, and possible an early welcome to the jeep world.

no it wont. the difference between the 6 and the 8 is negligible, and having the 2wd option doesnt save any fuel. the front axle is still rotating causing drag causing power loss. to benefit from the 2wd option as far as fuel economy, you would need manual locking hubs in the front. which the kit costs so much its not even worth it.

Thanks guy.. This actually helped.. I cant have it until Sunday but I got to drive it today&it drives like a brand new SUV.. I checked the oil&tranny fluid...kinda caught the guy off gaurd when I asked to lift the hood, guess he thought I didnt know anything, I dont know much but im not stupid....they looked fine.. &to answer the previous question.. No I dont trust my Impala across state let alone the country, I bought the damn thing for $3000 four months ago&put $2000 in brandnew parts..not including the mechanics fees..&its still not as reliable as I would like it to be...&im tapped out on it.. Im more of a truck girl anyway..

when you checked the trans fluid, was it a nice red color, or was it brown? did it smell burnt? if it does, run. theres a trans rebuild in the near future

if you're both comfortable with the trade, do it.
