Why is everyone talking about ACVW's on a Jeep Cherokee fourm? I thought this was a forum just for Jeeps?
If you want a lot of info on vw bettle why dont you head to Thesamba.com.
Awesome site for anything volkswagen...and is it just me or is there quite of few ACVW/Jeep owners out there?

My father and I restored a '68 Beetle for my first car. It ran but that was the only positive thing in the beginning. Holes in the floor, rats and squirrels, it was a mess but I was so proud to pay $500 of my own money to buy it when I was 13. It was a complete body-off resto to near show quality. The engine blew when I was in college so he bought it back from me and I started driving a '87 Mustang GT 5.0. I thought it was a major step up, and in some ways it was, but now given the choice I'd take my Beetle back! Dad rebuilt the engine, went over some things that needed attention, and sold it for $8000.

That being said, I and others here know it is totally possible to restore, but depending on the level it's at now it can be a major process (yes major, even for a simple Beetle). You really should check out thesamba.com, or my favorite which is shoptalkforums.com. An incredible wealth of knowledge at these places. Start searching around for basic restoration information and start reading.

Why not ask us for a jar of unicorn farts too. Do some research, look at a VW forum, do a google search. The first thing to find out would be what year is the one you're looking at. Are there any VW gatherings around where you live, like Bug-O-Ramma, or Bug-Ins? Those shows are great for finding enough parts to build a complete car in the swap meet area. Jeeps and VWs are cult favorites because they have personality and are simple to understand.

Its a shame you are not closer, my grandparents had about 15 or 17 over the years and I think there is still one left. Its been garaged forever and restored once, but that was many years ago.

I used to build VW's to run on the off road circuit at Crandon Wisconsin. The super beetle is only good to build a street bug. (socal look) due to their front suspension. It's a independent suspension McPherson strut The beetle used torsion rod suspension. So you have to make sure shock towers are not rusted out, on the super beetle. Along with the floor pan. I would look for reg. bug with, floor pan, front torsion assemble, And body shell, Pretty much intact. the rest you can buy steel or fiber glass. The motor for about $2500, You can have about 180 hp.. They are the cheapest motor to build per $ for HP. (considering a 1600 dual port starts out at 64 hp.) My last Baja bug I raced, was a 1960, with '66 tranny, '70 1600cc dual port with 96mm. jugs, shaved racing heads, pistons, valves, lifters, push-rods, 3/4 race cam. 4 baby delorito carbs. (VW version of webers) Polished aluminum intake stacks. oil cooler. 1996cc about 186 hp. Tires 31" x 10.50, 15" on back, 7"x15" on front. It could lift the front wheels off the ground in 1st. & 2nd. gear. If you would like to know more about VW Bugs. message me! I'll be glad to help you out.

You are probably better of searching for one that is farther away that has the least amount of rust possible. I used to have a 72 Super Beetle, and my dad is giving me his 70. Other than surface rust my 72 had the rockers rusted out. But good shape otherwise, and I paid ZERO for that.

Go to Mexico, and buy one. There all over. Than mail it back to yourself, in pieces. Due to emission laws. You can not out right import one from there.

It still has a mexicon vin so this will not work... You would spend more in shipping doing that then a car would cost you to buy here in the states. Their are so many out there that you don't need to do this anyway
