Custom Dashboard
I just finished my dashboard, thought i would share a couple of pics. When i bought my 90 xj a fire had destroyed the original dash and most of the interior, so i either had to buy a dash or build one, building one seemed a whole lot cooler. I used a dash wiring harness and fuse block from a 88 xj (Had to replace that harness, some fuse links under the hood and the starter relay to get the thing started). The frame for the dash is constructed from angle iron and the skin is regular old sheet metal from a washer machine. I have also stripped out all of the carpet and replaced the seats with 2000 xj seats. Other mods so far to the jeep include a 3in rough country lift with 31in bfg mud terrains on soft eights and i am in the process of building a roll cage for it too. When the cage is done im moving on to build my own bumpers, rock sliders, roof rack, and gas tank skid tank.

A total replacement - and done rather well!
I plan to redesign most of the IP in my 88 to accept aircraft gages. I had my pilot's ticket before I had my driver's license, I like the look of aircraft gages, and I'm an information junkie when it comes to vehicle operation.
So, I'd be redoing the instrument bucket and doing an eyebrow housing in the overhead at least (either straight fibreglas, or fibreglas with a reinforcing sheetmetal panel,) but I hadn't thought of ripping out the bulk of the IP and starting over. Got measurements?
Although, I may do mine in 1/4" plywood or so, with a stupid number of coats of urethane varnish (and painting the cabin side of the thing, probably OD to match what I'd like to do to the rest of the rig.) Should go fairly well, since I also plan to pull the carpet and probably Herculine the inside, and pull the inside trim panels and replace with sheet aluminum and Dzus fasteners.
Anyone know how to lower the seats in the XJ offhand? I'll need the extra headroom if I'm going to build the eyebrow housing, and I am inclined to remember that the XJ seats sit directly on the floor (most unibody cars have "seat risers" under the seats, so you've got some fiddle room...)

that is awesome. thanks for the pics. i have been looking all over for pics of custom metal dashes. mine is falling apart, so im going to be doing the same probably really soon. im tired of my dash rattling, and little plastic crap falling out the bottom every now and then.
