that looks pretty sweet and cheap is the name of the game when it comes to steel

- Just a teaser shot: I changed some of the sizing and the two tear design.
- The one side ways support isnt actually burnt it. I put it there so I'd look at it and go "wtf?" And remember I needed to cut it down some.
- Its upside down, so flip it over and add a stinger and that's what its gonna be..

I noticed in the original plan that the shorter tube is 39 inches and in this one it's 40.

Is that basically the distance between the bumper mounts? I thought I was measuring 33 or 34 inches between the mounts on my jeep. Maybe I'll have to remeasure : )



I picked up some bumper mounts that I'm thinking about using. I might add on tow hooks (weld angle onto the bottom of the brackets and attach hooks).

 

If youre talking about mine being 40? I just did 40 to make it and even number..I was basiclly guessing/going off of memory. Now that I think about it, 39 would probably 've worked out great. I'm adding two supports on the ends to weld too.

Outside to outside might be 39/40. And inside to inside might be 33/34.
Just an idea though.

You can see he added 'filler' to make his 39' work - or at least that's what I'm assuming thats whats going on there..But I dont know for sure.

But if that's true then my 40 will be way to big, but it will also allow for me to me able to put the supports where I want it them, if that makes sense? (Ie inside vs outside - his being outside)

 

No time to build, but I've been eyeballing it. 60" makes sense for the long pipe. I might do 40" for the other two, but move two verticals to the right spacing to be welded to the bumper mounts. They'd be offset from the front braces, but I'd have a good place for the license plate. The mounting to tow hooks was genius, they have more bolts to the frame and drop down a little lower. C4X4 tow hooks have an additional brace, I might do something like that also.


This should be called the Pythagorean Bumper, because the formula for a right angle triangle says that the length of the two sides squared and added together will equal the squared length of the long side. So if the two sides on the right angle are 8.5" and 9.5" the long side will be 12.75". See a calculator for lengths and angles. here.

Just channeling my inner geek. Hopefully can get to this soon, the kids are wrapping up the school year and keeping me hopping.

 

I did 60 big - 40 short, I've got mine on and everything. I'll post some pictures later if I remember.

My version of the bumper, still needs paint. I wouldn't characterize it as easy, but it was cheap.



The bumper is made out of 2" pipe. I also welded a harbor freight winch plate to the top (maybe $34 after 20% discount). It was welded with a 50 plus year old Lincoln 220.

I initially got Tompkin tow hook mounts, but the rear mount hole didn't align with the frame hole and I was concerned about strength. So I picked up a set of pre-cut bumper mounts and welded the Tomkin brackets to them. There is also 1/2" thick x 2 inch wide flat steel welded to the back of the bumper to attach the brackets.

I'm not sure if I'm going to get a winch yet, but it seemed like the time to put on a winch plate. It will be a hell of a license plate mount in the meantime.

If I did it over again, I think I would go straight to the C4x4 tow hook kit. It has extra bracing and includes the hooks. I also would have done a little better job measuring for the winch plate. The plate fit fine, but it will be a tight fit bolting the winch down.

I think it clocks in at about 90 lbs. All in all, I'm happy with the way it turned out.

 

wow these bumpers are awesome, im building front and rear bumpers for my senior project and i dont have the money for a tube bender so i was going to do plate steel and make one, it looked really hard when i was looking at pics, but seeing these make me want to do tube again, im gonna add the upper hoop for lights and to protect my winch, and im going to make a rear bumper to go with it with a 2" receiver in it, ill post pics here when i get them done

Nice work! I wonder if that winch plate fairlead roller mount is universal? I plan on fabbing a bumper just like this and mounting a Warn VR8000s on it.

The manual said 12,000 pound capacity, the bolt pattern was 10" x 4.5" and the fairlead bolts were 10" apart also, which seems fairly standard.
