I hope for you it is a D44 front as it would be a steel, don't bother with a lottery ticket for a while as this will have used up your allocation of GREAT luck! You would need to get brackets welded as the rear of the Grand is a coil 4 link set up and your cherokee is leaf. The Grand D44 center is aluminum and not really favored, you would be cheeper getting a D44 metric ton out of an old XJ preffered or MJ and changing the leaf spring mounts to the top. I've been looking for a D44 RS/ high pinion out of any Ford 73-77 F100/ F150 and haven't seen any at the junkyards, at the dismantlers they want 500+ and I would still have to cut it down and get shafts, locker and regear.
Here is a link to help id the axles by looking at the diff cover

If it has a Track Lock, Aussie, Detroit, a spool or welded carrier they are not selectable, and if you spin one hub the other should turn the same direction, may take a few turns for it to lock
If it's a selectable it will have an air line, electrical conection, or cable depending on which type to lock it and you would neet the switch/cable for install.
If the hubs counter rotate you have an open carrier- no locker or worn clutches in a traclock/ limited slip

Ok so I just called him and he told me he talked to his son and found out they are actually the stock dana 35 and 30 but that his son put 41 spline chromoly shafts and they do have lockers. He also put bigger "expensive" hubs on the front. Is it still a good deal?

41 spline???? I say BS.. I dont know of any company that makes a 41 spline shaft for either of those axles. The only 41 spline shafts I know of are super custom and for 9" axles and are gun drilled.

LOL he has no clue what he is talking about. there is no such thing as 41 spline d30 or d35 shafts. no its not a good deal. went from d44 to d30 and 35..... this story keeps getting better and better.

With you being new to axles, and this guy trying to sell axles, If i were you i would simply walk away. $400 is what a stock rear Dana 44 is going for, if you have that much money right now, start looking for someone selling one.
The rear axle in a grand cherokee is NOT bolt in ready for a XJ. while $400 seemed like a possibly good deal, none of it made sense so dont get stuck with $400 of scrap metel.

on top of all that grand cherokees are wider so youll need to get a different offset rim so your cherokee wont look totally stupid..

If you where closer and had a lil more of a budget I would sell you my XJ d44 that is all ready converted to disc brakes. Still would need to be regeared.. but I know someone who does that too
