you can use angle iron, but the uni rails aren't flat, so you'd have to cut and bend the angle iron to shape with the contour.
i've done it myself years ago to my first jeep, but i didn't bend it and the cross member was on a bit of an angle.
but i did see somewhere where they cut the angle and used a jack on the metal to bend it to the shape and welded it all in.
my only problem was when i welded the 1/4 inch angle to the thin uni rails, i blew through a few times in my plug welds. then i stitch welded it along the edge. i didn't finish that project tho, so i just aborted the whole mess and bought another jeep, the one in my avatar.

If you do it run the entire length. I ran from front control arm mount to front leaf spring mount and cracked just behind the leaf mount. I does give a good place to mount sliders to though.

for $150 the kits i think are worth it... you might can get angle iron for $20 or even free but time and cut off blade its just worth it to me to get the stiffners already ready to go with the holes and all...

Just curious, where do you get these kit's from. Sounds like a good set up I would be interested in doing.

i am getting ready to do mine with some 3x3x1/4 angle i have. in my opinion they will be stronger. it didnt cost me anything for the metal, and putting on the angle iron will not take long at all. just drill some holes for plug welds, cut, and weld. pretty simple
