Default Front winch bumper

Started building this front bumper from old 1/4 inch plate steel, straight cuts with a well saw, angle cuts with torch and 4.5 cut off wheel in a grinder.
Kinda of thought it stuck out a little to far but It won't fit any closer to the body

Why are you only spot welding it? Just wondering. Looking good so far though.

That's not spot welding. That is called stitch welding. It is used to prevent heat warp age in metal plates. Or, to hold a couple of pieces of metal together until a continuous bead is made. A spot weld is a point arc weld made when two pieces of sheet metal are overlapped.

Yes, thank you for the correction. For some reason I couldn't think of "stitch" and "spot" was the only thing coming to mind.

Anyway, question still stands. Why put on the other ends without doing a continues bead on the winch plate?

The plan was to tack it all together then remove from the jeep for the rest of the welding, open to advice, never built a bumper before

Gotcha. With the back open you'll be able to get in there fine to do a full bead. Just had me wondering. Make sure you add some gussets to the end caps to give them support. Like so...

I would also recommend you add a piece of angle on the underside of the winch plate to give it extra strength as well. Like so...

Little progress made, drilled the holes for the winch and roller plate, all with a harbor freight drill bit, pretty impressed with the 14 dollar bit set

Totally agree.Anyone can whip out a CC,in this economy-not many can pay for it.

I'll copy this build but I'll have the main plate higher thus putting the winch into the grill.I'll cut the grill untill the winch fits. This way it won't stick out so far for better approach & looks a little nicer.

Good work.

Thanks, I agree on the fact the winch sits pretty low, after using this one may have to go back to the drawing board and redesign
