Heres my solution to the lack of cup holders in older XJ's.
Just a standard water bottle holder for a bike. All switches are usable with no interference. And it beats the plastic one u buy from the dealer. That i'm assuming would break if it was bumped at anything below freezing. Hey and it doesn't look to bad when its holding a drink and its +100F out

I would do something like this except i'm sick of the stock dash. i'm gonna remove the outer layer and leave all the heater/a/c ducting and make a metal dash over it instead and then paint it.

They just pull off. I had to remove the shifter top (just pulls off too). I was able to put my fingers down through the black fuzz and just pull up, didn't take a lot of effort.

It's hard to tell, but how does your heat shield mount? IT looks like it has one bolt holding it onto the inner fender seam.

Then I thought of something new for the roof rails instead of the gutter mounts. I took some stock rails I had and pulled all the spring hardware out of them and took 1" tubing on top of the mounting feet. I used all stainless hardware. These are super strong!! I stood on only one of them and it didn't even flex. I weigh ~200lbs. and the stock rails went right to the floor.
Here's some pictures.
Here's mine vs. Stock
Still have to bedline them, but it was too cold in the garage to paint. Hopefully I be able to finish them next week if I get a chance to heat up the garage.

It's actually staying put pretty well the way it's set up at the moment, though I am planning to go back and put at least one more bolt throught the pinch seam and one in the bottom. I was kinda rushed when I was finishing it up, and I just haven't gotten back to actually working on it. I'm also thinking about putting some tubing or something on the top to attempt to "seal" it to the hood like the commercial ones do.

hahaha sadly enough that's acurate at the moment . Don't know why I didn't expect anyone would call me on that.

Mines just bolted to the underside of the lid of an Army ammo box that slides in exactly in behind the seats. Just to be safe, I bolted it to the wheel wells, plus it locks so no chance of theft. It's the perfect size for the XJ bed, and the ammo box holds all my emergency car essentials and tools with a little room to spare, and doesn't get in the way when going grocery shopping. No photos of it cause it's out right now so I can re-paint it in dark camo green to match the rest of the Jeep.

alot of really great ideas here...but the one i was hoping to see aint here yet. anybody built their own posi-lock to replace the vacuum actuated 4x4 stuff?
im sure if the vac system is kept up its fine...but a cable actuated set-up has got to be trouble free...doesnt it?
those $180 kits ive seen on feebay look like the manufacturer must making about $170 in profit....
