The one thing you have to be real careful about with gutter mounts is the door clearance. If the clamps hangs too low your door will let you know!

I'd be willin to bet you could throw a couple hundred pounds of stuff an the rails without any problems,,. but how well is your rack built, and how many weight distribution points do you have? (ie.., gutter mounts)

I have mulled the spare tire problem over and studied these forums for ideas. Here are some conclusions: I don't like something to swing out every time I want to get into the rear hatch and I don't like a lot of weight behind the rear axle, plus the cost of buying a swing out or the work of fabbing one (I don't have the equipment to do that). If one adds gas cans, jack, shovels to the rear swing out then it is that much more weight behind the rear axle.
Roof top locations can be problematic too: direct sun deterioriation, weight on top, hassle of getting it off when needed.
Inside the cabin it takes up too much room.
My conclusions (fwiw): a lightweight roof rack with the spare mounted center fore/aft/side-to-side as possible, spare tire cover to block the sun, avoid lots of other stuff up there. Or, inside and build a platform around the tire so other items can be strapped down on top the tire.
I am working on this problem and will post my pics and ideas when ready.

i would agree with that, but a rear swing arm is what i do. out of the way. doesnt take up any room. and doesnt add any resistance or weight to the top.

They can at least hold two people climbing around on them and bouncing on them. I used the raingutter mounted style but did a little modification to te rain gutter so that we could make the mounts strong enough for people to sit/lay/climb/jump/etc. Or whatever else the rack would be used for without having to worry about it flying off on the freeway
