I'll post pics of it mounted in a few days. I painted it today and still need to locate some diamond plate rubber or something like that for no slip finish. Bed liner is an option I guess but I want something with a heavy texture for non-slip surface.

Wife has one in her new Patriot. I call it the second gas pedal. I use it to lift myself when passing gas. She hates it but I think it is funny. I always told her my XJ needs a second gas pedal.

Thanks for the idea guy, I like the skateboard tape idea, thanks Murdoc.
Kuro89, I'm sure an old tire would last forever but I don't have an old tire to cut up. I do have an old rubber floor mat laying around and unused that might be perfect.
dougfrompa, second gas pedal.... I laughed so hard, almost had my coffee on the monitor..... your poor wife....LOL.

So i can tell you with 100% confidence that on your application it will work flawlessly. It takes a long time to wear it out too. My G19 is a 24/7 carry weapon that has seen more mud and asphalt than most jeeps probably have, and in four years it is still on the same strip of tape.

I looked at skateboard grip tape but I don't think I'd like the sandpaper type but the rubber grip tape for skateboards or 3M's Safety Tread (also used for skateboards) might work. I gotta go to HomeDepot and look at it in person to see if it's rubber or sandpaper type.
Thanks for the good suggestions.

I drilled (4) 1/4" holes in the foot rest then made the holes square to accept carriage bolts so the bolts will be semi flush when I mount the foot rest. Pulled back the carpet and drilled holes in the floor and fire wall then from underneath tried to drill through the carpet in it's normal position. Damn jute/carpet padding kept winding around the drill so I cut and folded the jute out of the way. Then I was able to drill through the carpet. Stupid jute, I hate that stuff. Tomorrow I'll buy some longer carriage bolts and see how it feels installed. The anti-slip tape will have to wait till next weekend (working on a budget here). I'll post pics when it's completed.
On a side note I loaded my mig with .030 solid wire and made a dozen pratice welds. As expected the thicker wire ran hotter and made a much nicer weld bead on the 1/8" steel.

The best way to drill through carpet is with a hot soldering iron. I don't think it will work on the jute though.
The jute played hell on my flashlight holder instalation.

Got it finished and installed. The 3M step and ladder grip tape is either black (sandpaper) or grey (rubber). I went with the grey because my daughter also drives the XJ and if I used sandpaper and she scratched her favorite shoes I would be carne muerta. The foot rest feels good, I expect I'll like it more as time passes.
One thing I would do different is to make the floor mount section longer. I originally intended to have the lower part of the foot rest 1" closer to the firewall. Unfortunately the drain plug is right in the way so I had to move the base to the rear.
