I did this up really fast in cad to give you guys an idea of the lines. I will do a full out cad design asap to give a deep idea as to what im trying to do and how.
The image shows a theoretical rear view of a cherokee. The upper half contains the window and the handle, with the area below the "split" being the second, tailgate portion.

OK, getting a little ahead of myself/us but figure out a way to open it (like a tailgate) from the right or left side instead of the center and add one of these...obviously without the u bolts and extended for bigger tires. If you have to add reinforcement anyway, why not? I absolutely hate we dont have better options for mounting a rear tire. My thinking for the easiest way to accomplish this would be to measure, head to a JY and find something you can chop off, weld in and go from there, possibly a Sport Trac Exploder.
Got me excited! DO EEEEEET.

I would definitly design mine for a up/down and not a left/right simply because trying to fit a tire into the whole scenario would be very difficult and would not go with what im trying to do well

Yea, up down but with an offset handle to mount a tire carrier. Maybe try an MJ tailgate. Should be about the right size and with the cables that keep it from comming down too far, it should hold a tire...sorry if I jacked your thread . Maybe I need to find some measurements and start thinking about this myself...

Heres a cad from this morning. It shows a rear view, with the upper half with the window removed and the tailgate down. Also shows a lame spare tire and view of the bench seat to give you a true idea what im going for. Shows the support cables.
The cross hatching shows the tailgate

it might not NEED a torch, but its certainly more fun. Plus the torch is warm. but since its -14 outside im content to remain in this seat.

Ive been thinking about doing the same exact thing but havent gone and bought a spare lift gate to do it too. Ive seen guys put commanche tailgates on XJs so i might do that but keep the top peice original

Agreed. I will probably wait for the spring so i can be comfortable and really take my time. I want it to be a clean job, and it gives me plenty of time to do GOOD cad work
