rear ladder
Do not know what you had in mind but I was recently thinking of a rear ladder as well.
One point to consider is that my rear hatch is fiberglass, not sure about other years, (Ours is a 94) this made attaching it a much bigger issue.
I did find the attached:

for the money it seems ok. Unforunitly the way this one is mounted interferes with the overhang on my rack./
Hope this helps
good luck

How about getting a nice rear bumper with a tire mount. Use the mount as a step to access the roof rack. I just dont like ladders, reminds me of RV's.

If you want a ladder and don't want to make one or don't have a lot of money to by one like me go to a junkyard and find a full size van and get the ladder off the back of it that's what I'm going to do when I get a chance to go to the jy

if you want a ladder you'll probably want a rack for it to lead to.
a rear ladder wont be attached to the rack, just the hatch, or else it wouldn't let the hatch open.
lots of people build racks from EMT conduit for pretty cheap, lots of stuff in the fab section about that, you might be able to build a ladder from the conduit too, but idk, I like square tubing ladders and racks better personally

I climb into mine by standing on the tire, and then the rear door handle (not with all my weight)
But I'm no spring chicken, so I will probably make some type of retractable ladder for mine. I like the conduit idea.

I saw someone mention earlier about you couldn't attach it to the rack, I don't have a ladder on my XJ but, I think you could make one and make a hinge set up where it would move with the back hatch or do like a set up where you could take it on and off easily like a trailer with ramps where they just slide on to the hinge..if yall understand that?
