on our landscaping trailer we used a garage door spring that we put inside a metal tube, the tude is welded to the trailer then on end of the spring is attached to the trailer with a bolt, then the other has a cable on it that attaches to the tailgate. if that makes sense lol. but it works great....or i was thinking you could get hood hinges off of a older car that has those big coil springs on them to help open it. those are pretty strong

i know them hoods was pretty heavy but the weight of a 33 and the material might be way too much.

But the coils would probably stick up....
I've been over thinking this. I'm just gonna make it, and make it work, hopefully by the end of the month, or sooner....

Somewhat off topic, not trying to steal your thread, but does anyone have suggestions for me, I'm trying to find a swing out tire carrier for my '88 Cherokee Laredo, it came with a cover in the cargo area, but as soon as you put even a stock tire in there all room for other things is gone. I don't want to hang a 35" tire or anything, nor do I need to undertake building it myself right now, something cheap is my goal.

Not much use, but here's my 2 cents, the 80's and 90's Ford 250-350 pickups had some pretty heavy springs for the hood assist, if the tire mount wasn't too long it should be sufficient for an assist plus a locking mechanism.

Its obviously not done, but I do have a few progress pics. I am thinking about getting someone else to cut out the hinge tabs because the ones I cut are terrible. (someone who has a CNC plasma so I have less finish work to do to them to make them exactly the same)
Then I just need to make the tire mount, the lift mounts, figure out what size I need. Order them, try them, clean it up, a lot, and paint.
I hate having to take all the tools out to work on this, then have to drag them all back in when I'm done.
