I will draw it up in paint when I get back on the computer (iPod right now). The way I see it, if a roofrack can hold a tire and other stuff, why not mount stuff to it too. It will be beefed up too.

X1994J do you have pics with it down and some close ups of the latching mechanism would be helpful. That looks like a long way to lift such a heavy tire/wheel.

I think it would work but i think you would have issues with the gas struts. I think if you used something else that would PULL the carrier up instead of PUSH it up like on our hatches then it may work. I just dont think you would ever get good geometry to get enough leverage on it for a strut to push it up. BUT i may be wrong.
look at your hatch and soom hoods on other cars for insperation as to where to mount the struts....
Good luck. I too will be watching this one...

I would like to start by saying I like the idea, and the drawing to show it.
I was thinking about how to make it lift. Either plow springs, or a light duty winch to an offset lever on the top is what I came up with.
However I can not get over the safty issues involved. You would need a solid latch or lock for when it is in the upright position. That kind of weight comming down would be a very bad thing. specially if you are getting something out of the back of the jeep when it happens.

Well said, ITSAJEEPTHING safety is a huge consideration. Maybe the limiting factor will be the safety of those beneath the hatch. Another thought was how much abuse can the hinges take before they fail with that much weight.

IMO is to much eengeniering, tubes, and stuff for a spare tire.
but it is ok
and that lift shok is ajoke, you need an hidraulic assisted piston for that thing.
a 33 tire + aluminium 15x8 is arround 70pounds + you need more than 70 pounds of steel to hold the tire in place if you off-road often.

The hinges will be the equivalent of lower control mounts with bushings. I may do three of them, but I'm not sure. If they can support a jeep, I'm pretty sure they can support what I'm making.
The lift shock things will likely be spring assisted be spring assisted. But like I said, they are pretty stiff already.
I will make it lock in the up position, probably much like a driveway basketball hoop does when you raise and lower it, every few inches will it will lock.
