As to practice, even though having held four different welding jobs over the years, when you haven't welded (much) in years it's almost like being a newbie again.

I'd run .035 wire which will allow you to probably get the most amps out of it. Make sure your stick out is as tight as you can keep it without ruining consumables. I easily used about 3lbs of wire per bumper. Don't forget about your duty cycle. Also id get some scrap 3/16" and work on angling and filling corner joints.
