Is there a problem if the settings are way off from the chart in the welder door? I assume the problem is I'm just a beginner and can't weld as fast as a pro. 1/8 steel with a Hobart 190 and the settings are 5 current, 60 feed. I have to put about half that or I get giant blobs, holes and go all over the place. It's ok to turn everything down and go slower? It seems to be working but just want to confirm this is ok.

What that guy said above. If the wire is too fast the base won't melt and you will feel the gun pushing back. If it's too slow, you will get a lot of spatter and long puddle after a little bit of welding. Welding is very slow. Noobs generally go way too fast but may be you are the exception.

this is a good reason to spend a little more than what a box store welder offers and get a decent pro welder from a welding provider.
my little lincoln 140c has continuous voltage and speed controls and not the tapped controls that come from the cheaper units. i can adjust anywhere between 4 and 5 precisely.
