The center most part directly under the winch sticks out approx. 6 inches from the grille, any narrower than that the winch wouldn't be able to be mounted without notching the grille, the bolt holes on the winch are 4 1/2 centers and the winch is right at 6 inches deep, the outer edge of the winch feet are right on the front edge of the bumper and the welded seam on the rear of the bumper, so the mounting is as narrow as you can get, the rear (backsplash?) of the bumper is no more that 1/4 inch past the front of the grille. So...to answer the question i guess, the furthest most part of the bumper would be about 6 1/4 inches from the grille. As far as hanging on rocks, the front crossmember/ radiator support hangs about 1 inch lower than the bumper, and the ends of the bumper, underneath are plated at angles to act as somewhat of a "slider". Under the center of the bumper it is completely covered with plate parellel to the top plate, with access to the bolts that hold the winch on. I can take some quick measurements, if anyone is interested on the basics for building their own bumper, and if i can find my good camera i'll take more pics. It'll probably hold up to all the rocks here in southwest louisiana...

Its been a while since i've posted, and also since i've done anything to the XJ. I have the metal for the rear bumper and sliders, now if it would just cool down so it's not 120 degrees in the shop then i'd probably get motivated to do some more work on it. I'll get back on it soon, and more progress pics will follow. Stay tuned.
