Also installed the shocks with the body on top. Couldn't fine one same answer when it came to the orientation of the shock. From what I found on the net, Bilstein shocks install with logo right side up. Sounds right...???
The axle still needs to be moved forward a bit as well as the pinion angle isn't exact. It'll all be fine tuned perfectly once I take it to crawlertech on Thursday. Just gotta torque everything down, fill with fluids and grease.

Just be careful on the maiden voyage. I was with a friend after a steering mod, tried to speed up to fast... Death wobble.

I know all about death wobble! Scariest thing in the world! Last XJ had a loose track-bar and nearly poohed my pants when it kicked in.
Gonna be taking roads that don't go above 45 mph's to get to the shop. Don't have a steering stabilizer yet either.

lol wasn't trying to sound like an ***.

As for the shock orientation, they're gas charged so either way is fine. I usually see bilsteins mounted body up though

Can I haz your axle?

Buttoned up the stock diff cover for the last time. Or until whenever I can get a hold of a Crane cover. Torqued everything down and greased everything that needed it and filled all the fluids. She's all ready for her voyage to the shop this Thursday. The axle is sticking out about an inch wider on the passenger side and the alignment is way off Glad to pass it off to the professionals!
Then it it will be time to take two steps back once I get going on the cross-over steering with custom track bar and axle mount which I should have done from the beginning. That will go along with a custom 4-link long arm setup I hope to have done by the end of summer. Also going to be stiffening up the frame and adding rock sliders. Who knows what else... Just Empty Every Pocket but it's totally worth it and so much fun!

Only monotube shocks can be ran like that. Plain gas charged twin tubes cannot. But you have them mounted correctly.

Dukie you can buy mine

Just got done driving my Jeep! Defiantly needs an alignment and some tweaking, but had no vibes at 45 and drove better than I thought it would that's for sure! Cant wait to see how she drives after everything is aligned tomorrow!

One last update for this build. Found out the 35" BFG all terrains were 15 years old and none of the tire shops in town would touch them. Ended up getting new tires! Cooper Discoverer STT 35x12.50r15 mud terrains. Now that the wheels are balanced and have new tires on, she really does drive better than stock. NO BS!
Gonna be starting a new thread for the custom crossover steering setup soon...
Thanks to all of you who gave out advice, constructive criticism and compliments. Hope I was able to help some of you with your axle build and with questions about what all is involved. I learned a lot myself.
Here are a couple pics of my finished(for now) Jeep XJ...

I actually like those wheels. And the cooper STTs are straight up sexy tires - good choice.
