did he ever finish it? i really like the idea of a roof top tent, think them are pretty nice. was he building it himself from scratch or buying the kit.
to the OP thats pretty nice looking. i thought about doing something similar but didnt want to chance ripping it off while out in the woods. its a good thing to because the first time out i would have done so against a tree

yes another roof rack
Here are a few more pics. If you can see in the pics, I took 1/4"x1" flat and bolted down first with the stock nuts that slide in the track. This made it follow the roof line perfect. After I had the basket made, I tacked everything together in place on the Jeep then removed it ot do the welding. The brace that is on the inside is the same 1/4"x1" flat as the outside. It runs the length of the fender. Also the rack is made out of EMT and I do all of my welding like this with a torch. With alittle practice this is the best way I have found to weld it. You do have to take care as to not breath the fumes. I have a large shop fan that I set right in front of the work area and point it away from me. This works well for me without making to much wind. Sorry for the long post.

I would like to see someone Use my idea. That is why I posted the pics. With the ladder on both side instead of the back it makes it so easy to tie things down. I see alot of spare tires in the rack, but I use mine for tree stands and other large objects. If anyone out there hunts here is a pic of some tree stands I made the same way with the conduit. If you take the time to think about how to brace them it will be lite and and very sturdy. 14' to the seat.

Dang that is awesome. some day my fabrication skills will allow me to do something like that. Unfortunately They are not there yet. If you had some drawings or blueprints with measurements that would be great.

I always love it when someone does something original with their XJ. And even tho your paint is oxidized I'm still in love with the red XJ. That old style red color is rare these days and I'm very fond of it (I wonder why ?)
Very cool idea bro - I hope you braced the heck outta those ladders on the inside! Would be interesting to see how the trees accept you. My own XJ is a dedicated tree magnet, no matter what I do. Seems to me that even tho the ladders might snag a branch or 2, the added benefit is that they help protect the quarter panel & glass. As one Jeeper that has lost glass on both rear quarters at different times, and banged up the sheet metal as well, I can certainly appreciate your design. Keep on Jeepin'!

Thanks for the kind words. It is nice to see someone else that likes it. Sorry but I do not have a drawing or build sheet. I am the type that will just stare at it for a while then start cutting. So far the rack has done pretty good with the trees. You can see by the different color panels and the primer that it does get some abuse in the woods. The rack is just spray bombed now but I think I am about to get our local vo-tech center to do a quick paint job on the jeep. I dont care that it looks bad, it just hurts me to see the surface rust starting. When they paint it I will pull the rack and put some good paint on it also. Let me know if I can help with some measurements or more pics.
