1.5 Ton Jack Enough for an XJ?
Hi all,
Title says it all lol. Harbor freight is having a killer sale on some stuff and I have a coupon for a pretty freaking nice 1.5 ton aluminum racing jack. Was wondering if 1.5 tons is enough for jacking up an XJ without metal bumpers or a winch. Also getting some 3 ton jack stands.
Thanks,
George

If it's lifted, I'd get at least the 3 ton floor jack and 6-ton jackstands. They are much taller. I had to use the 6ton jackstands when I removed my axles and also when I installed my lift. They were the only ones tall enough.

I like my Harbor Freight 6-ton Jack and jack stands, i feel more comfortable being under my rig for extended periods of time. A co-worker of my dad died from a 1.5-ton jack and cinder blocks failing and crushing him under his truck so I'm kind of paranoid about it all.

I would go with the 3 ton. I've had a 1.5 ton fail on me changing out engine mounts randomly. Did one and it held great, started doing the other and it jacked up and went right back down. Also.. You may not have the entire weight of your vehicle on the jack at, but i like to use a jack thats rated for at least my entire vehicles weight.. I would go with a 2.5-3k, or 5k if you have the cash.. That way you dont have to worry if you need to work on a big ol' diesel somday.

Wasn't using it to hold up the car, was using it to hold up the engine. And had a jack stand ready to go under it once it was up. Nothing wrong with using a jack to hold a car up for a short period of time, no reason to pull out the jack stands every time you take a wheel off.
