Adequate, yes. Safe? Not particularly. If I'm going to be anywhere that a limb could be caught under the car if it falls, I have at least one jackstand under it to catch it if it does.

If you dont have stands atleast throw your tires under hub/frame if it were to fall youd have a little bit of space an not dead... but yes i agree jack stands are the way to properly safely do it and yes the bigger the better i was simply answering his question it will work

I have one of those jacks and it will lift one side of an axle pretty well but, I wouldn't trust it to lift one whole end of the vehicle and due to my measly little 2" BB, it doesn't go high enough to lift from a frame rail.

I bought it back when I was still driving a little FWD compact car and it was plenty for that. It comes up a "little short" where the Jeep is concerned though.

Personally, I'd go for the 2 ton and it will lift about 4 inches higher.

I bought that 1.5 to lift my daughters VW Bug as it is really thin and reasonably priced. It works fine but it is not the most durable. I would not risk an arm or a leg getting under a car without a stand, especially this one.

the "low profile" 1.5 ton HF jack lifts taller than the standard 2 ton jack. who the heck is saying you need a 3 ton jack to lift a XJ? you realize you're not lifting the entire weight of the vehicle at once, right? 3 tons is 6000lbs.... thats for lifting huge *** commercial trucks, not our little unibody. my 1.5 ton lifts my 5000lb rig just fine.

i have an aluminum HF 1.5 ton, and a bigger, low-pro HF 2.5 ton. the 2.5 ton stays at home, the 1.5 will be staying in the toolbox of the jeep. they really work just fine. the dumb craftsman 1.5 ton ones that are 4" wide with casters... yea those suck.

The point is he should get whichever lifts the highest. The 3 ton was it for me, it lifted higher than the others they had at the time. Those tiny caster jacks aren't worth a ****.

I got a 3 ton suv floor jack from Walmart. Works nice too. Plus it has an extension that you drop in the actual place where the jack comes into contact with the vehicle. And it was only around $80 too....

One major safety issue with those HF aluminum floor jacks is lateral rigidity (or lack there of). The little 1.5 ton, not the larger ones. I would definitely use jack stands and not trust the floor jack to hold the vehicle up if you're getting under it.
I've seen one (not mine but, one exactly like it) bend, fold, then collapse when the truck it was holding up, shifted slightly. Fortunately, nobody was under it at the time.

I had a 1.5 jack holding up my jeep and a jack stand under the frame (not touching, wasn't tall enough, but like 4" off) and with both front tires off and me under the jeep the jack failed and the jeep FELL 4" and landed on the jack stand. Scared the **** outa me and I was shaking for a good hour. Never trust your life to a jack

Ended up getting these guys. HF 2.5 ton low-profile steel hydraulic jack with 20" of lift, as well as 2 6 ton jack stands. I'm excited
