But jokes apart:
In a diesel XJ you get basically the same configuration since the torque is roughly the same. I'm not sure about gearing but it's the same D30 and D35 combo (D44 as an option so very rare, nobody needed it!) with the same NP231 TC though someone somewhere told me that some models came with a reinforced TC... Not sure about transmission but it is probably an AX-5.



Note that diesel XJs were very popular here and are equally as common in 2-door or 4-door body styles.

The power figures leave somewhat to be desired for the 2.1L matching the earliest carburated 2.5L AMC in torque but only has 85hp (@3750rpm). The later VM 2.5L boasts the same torque as the 4.0 despite the 2 less cylinders. It therefore gets much better mileage than the inline 6 and because of that makes it a theoretically better choice for wheeling. But that's up to personal preference...

You get a stock turbocharger manometer instead of a voltmeter on the dash, that's it for the interior.



I started this thread because I was wondering if there was an export business opportunity to be taken. But the currency exchange rate would work against me and the price of shipping alone is 4 times the premium some of you would be willing to pay! That's also not including the purchase price of the XJ here which is twice the price of a Cherokee in the USA (not accounting for exchange rates).

So all in all, not a good plan for either of us!

Yea if you were going to do it you should've hopped on when gas prices were higher than diesel and everybody and their mom wanted a diesel. You probably could've made some coin then.

Anyways, if you did import (export) to the US, wouldn't all the gauges be metric?

I wouldn't mind have a Celsius water temp gauge. Would be kinda cool.

Iv seen two 4bt diesel wronglers floating around ohio. They did well from what i saw but more of a novelty to considering what can be done with the 4.0

All the guages? You'd only have temperature and the speedo... And believe me, it's a challenge getting to 80mph so you needn't worry about that! If you really want to know, learn the equivalent! I know what 80 mph is off the top of my head! :-P

Also the temperature redline means the same thing! And generally, you don't want the needle to go over than halfway up! ;-)

To be honest: as much as I want any pustules on my private parts.

The 2.1 is underpowered and the 2.5 has serious thermal problems. And when you hit the skinny pedal they start to get really "hungry".

And prepare to buy new heads for the 2.5 every like 50-70k miles.

I just dont have a price in mind yet but it has 240k original miles, decently straight body, clean title, 4x4 hi and low both work good. Any thoughts? Think its the 2.1 Renault engine and the only turbo diesel 80-90s body I’ve seen in the entire country, I’ve scowered CL and eBay, have yet to find one out there

I want to do a diesel conversion, but want a Mercedes OM617 five cylinder turbo.
There is issues to overcome like oil pan axle clearance.

Honestly, I wouldn't buy one, regardless of condition. I love my Jeep because it has proven to be bulletproof. Simple, robust design that works. From what I've read, that is not the case with the diesels. I'm a Jeep guy, not a vintage car collector.
