I had 33's and 4.10's in my XJ and it was decent. still was underpowered going into the mountains on the highway so I think 4.56's would have been perfect. but theres alot of ups and downs where I live...

best option if you want to re-gear but not spend alot of money IMO

My name is Twitch and I'm new to the forum.I just got a 96 Grand Cherokee and I am in love with it.
I'm looking to put a lift on it, bigger tires, a roof rack with spare tire and a brush gard.
Kinda new to this stuff and looking for suggestions.
Anything would be helpful
Thanks
Twitch

Hi Twitch, Welcome to the Forum! With your very first post you have committed what is known as a "threadjack" Congrats!

Its ok, plenty of *cough cough* threads on this forum get repeated constantly. That's how goes, you'll figure it out - Google is your friend and there's also a search feature here.

3" or less and 31's or 33's is a good starting place on your zj. Go to 35's or 37's and you will enhance your off road experience and your internet forum notoriety.

Not all 4.10 8.8's have limited slips, to my knowledge. Honestly, unless you find one with decent-shape clutch packs, I would get an open diff. Later if you decide to get a locker you will need a new carrier of you get the limited slip.

This is coming from a guy running a 4.10LS 8.8. Love the axle :-)

And 86-Chief, the gearing preferences for the 2.5 are a little different if I remember right. Something like 4.88's with the 2.5 and auto tranny for 33-34" tires.

Some things to consider:
do you want to spend considerably more on tires? 31’s will be considerably cheaper
do you really need the extra inch of clearance under the diffs?
to match the stock gearing to tire size ratio on 33’s you would need 4.56’s. I can feel a great difference when running 31’s compared to when running 33’s running stock gearing still.
Braking performance is more and more reduced the larger and heavier the tires get as well as longevity of pads and shoes being reduced.

my priorities may be different than yours but I’ve decided it’s a waste to run any larger than 2-3 inch lift and over 31-32 inch tires unless I’m going to do 50-75% of my driving on semi technical or technical trails. I do a lot of street driving and light off-road very seldom as I just don’t get the time. I always wanted to lift my trucks and put the biggest tires possible but finally came to the conclusion it’s impractical as I never get to use the vehicle to its capabilities and just end up wearing down big expensive tires on the road.

I think Waynerd makes a wise and important point here. It seems to me that too many folk just start hacking at their wheel wells and throwing on big rubber just because they can.
Is there like.. a chart or something out there that shows what the BEST Tire-lift-gear combo is for different driving and usage styles I wonder? You know.. like "Daily Driver with occasional weekend trails" vrs "Never drive on the road. and trailer it to the trails.

I ran 31's on a bone stock suspension for a few years. I had some rubbing against the inside of the wheel well when I made tight turns.. But for daily driving they were great. Okay for mild trail driving.. tho I wished for a lift.
