Default 4.0 VS. Honda Engine

Me and my friend are having an argument which would last longer a well maintained 4.0 or a well maintained honda engine in honda civic circa; 2005 cause i have heard the 4.0 can last 400,000 being well maintained but he says his honda will out last any jeep

They both are pretty bullet proof. Any Honda built after 01 is junk in my opinion, my first car was a 94 Civic, had 230k on the clock, just scraped it a year ago and she still ran like a top. My Cherokee has 205 on it and gets beat on regularly.

well you got the 4.0 that runs on gas and the honda engines that run on bags of rice

Both engines are pretty solid. IDK about the Jeep engine as much as the Hondas' though. I have a 2000 Honda Civic Si which is bullet proof until now. I also have a '95 Honda Accord with 200,000 miles on it & hasn't failed me yet & still looks brand new. My wifes 2003 Honda Odyssey hasn't had any problems either. I guess it's just how you maintain them. Even though my 2000 Si runs Nitrous every now & then, it's still an awesome engine. My father in-law has had Jeeps his whole life, though & swears by their engines too... I'm new in the XJ world so.........

To keep it fair, tell your friend that the Honda engine would need to be fitted into a proper 4x4 and used off road too. Not in some tiny tinny compact of a car, doing half the work most of the time.

IMHO they both seem pretty reliable. Tough call on this..

Not a very good comparison as the 4.0 is worked alot harder, but if i had to choose one or the other as more reliable with proper maintenance i would have to say the jeep just on the sheer fact that i have seen sooooo many 4.0 run through the mill and beaten to the point of no return and still run like the day it was built over 200K miles after the fact. I have also never personally seen a Honda with over 250K miles and i have seen Jeeps with well over that.

I work on cars for a living and I have seen a good number of Honda tipping 250k or a lot more and still running very good.
After all the the 4 banger was designed for that specific vehicle. Not a near 4000 pound 4x4.
Now don't get me wrong I am not a Honda thumper but as a DD commuter I would take one in a second for the mpg's and reliability.
