Default 4.10's????

ok i have a 98' w/auto trans, D 30 and a 8.25 axles. i want to run 4.10 gears, becuase i plan on running 33's. is 4.10 gear apropriate gears? but im clueless when it comes to gears. so what will i need? do i need to run lockers? will i need new carriers? who are good company's and somewhat cheap because im on a budget. im lost?

4.56 would be a better gear ratio for 33s. As far as the lockers are concerned, it depends on what you will be using the XJ for and how hard you plan on wheeling it. Parts wise, you will need a new carrier for the Dana 30 up front, but can use the stock carrier for the 8.25. If you had the D35 rear then you would need a new carrier for it also.

Your fuel mileage will suffer with 33s and the acceleration performance will SUCK. I'm running 33s on the stock 3.55 gears and the take off is lackluster to say the least. The most affordable, yet quality rated, rear locker would be an Aussie for the 29 spline 8.25. As far as buying the gears, check http://www.ringpinion.com/ but the labor to have them installed and properly set up is what will bite you in the wallet. Or you can go the super cheapo route and find a 4 cylinder automatic XJ in the junkyard and get the axles out of it. The 4 bangers had factory 4.10 gears with the auto trans. That is what I have set up for mine, I am just to darn lazy to get outside and swap the axles.

I'm going to switch to 4.10s from 3.73s in my ZJ over the winter. When I was still on 235s, I felt like I had good pickup and my mileage was decent. When I switched to 30s, my mileage wasn't much different but I felt like I lost some power. And now on 31s, I feel like I've lost more power (I drive a mountain pass daily...), and almost 2 MPG, even though I can still get 20 at times (not according to the overhead info center). I just want some power back.

You will barely notice a difference from 3.73 to 4.10. The ratios are just to close for the performance to improve. Personally, I would look to a more agressive ratio.

4.56 is the most recomended gear ratio for 33s. 4.10 is sufficient but 4.56 is better.

HP is specified as reverse cut for the D30.

The D30 will need a new carrier but the 8.25 will not. The stock axle shafts will work fine. It's better to ask questions now than to buy a whole pile of parts that will not fit your vehicle.

I read this and was wondering couldnt you just swap the gears and not the whole axle?

Absolutely, but by the time you buy a new carrier, ring and pinion gear set, and master install kit you could purchase a complete axle from the junkyard. Of course that is taking into account that the jy axle does not need a rebuild as well. Then there is the labor cost of having the gears changed unless you do it yourself. Then you add in the cost of the specialty tool require for proper setup and you are spending a lot of cash real quick. The complete axle swap is just a suggestion for saving both time and beer money.
