The 8.25 is designed and built by Chrysler and it is just how they set theirs up. The only difference in the 8.25 carriers in between the 27 and 29 spline differentials. You can go from 3.07 on a 8.25 all the way to 4.88s with the same carrier.
Am using 4.10s for D30 without change anything. Just replaced the old gear and put the new one 4.10 ring gear. More than that, I even use the Eaton G80 locker and no problems as you can see at the pic.

For the Dana 30, the carrier is thicker for higher numerical carriers . Black Devil - in the picture it looks as if there is a spacer on the rear of the gear. Is there? If so, this will account for why a low gear carrier was used. With an AW4 use 4:10 gears. With a manual go to 4:56. I was running 4:10 gears on my manual with 32s. I would have preferred slightly lower gears, but it was a whole lot better than the 3:73's I took out. My friend has 4:56 gears with 33s and an AW4. He hates it because of highway driving. The RPM's are too high. My 32s rub big time when the front sway bar is disconnected. I still need to do a whole lot more trimming. I have a RE 3-1/2 lift along with 3/4 inch spacers up front and extended shackles in the rear. Jeep is the one in my avatar.

Hi XJ Rat, happy new year. Do you see any Spicer? It was not Spicer. G80 carrier form is like that. I just use a shim to make the adjustment.

Friend of mine put the final gear 41:9 (456) on the D30 and the limited slip from Volvo as you can see in the picture.
