It depends on the trails, honestly.
Some would argue that a 2wd with a locker is just as capable as a 4wd with both diffs open.
Another thing to consider, depending on your mechanical ability and resources at hand, you can always convert to 4wd. And its easier than one would think.
Because we all know that once you start, you'll always want more.
If you are a bit nervous about that in any way, its better off to just be patient and wait to find a rig thats 4wd. They aren't difficult to find, esp if you are patient.

Its hard to say.
It can be done cheap if you get a truck with a toasted motor or smashed up from a crash.
It can be expensive, too. Depends on what you find and where you find it.

Its always good to have 4x4. I only use it for emergencies.. or whenever I would gget stuck in 2wd,, which hasnt happened yet. But Im sure Im going to love 4x4 when the snow comes this winter... Not sure of your location. Imho I wouldnt buy a Jeep without it... Always good to have it just incase...

Imo I think buying a 2wd is like buying a 6cyl camaro or mustang. Fine if ur a girl. But a guy in a 6 banger american sports car is just wrong. I would not waste my time on anything with a jeep badge if it did not have 4wd. I don't mean to offend those of u who have 2wd; its just how I look at it.
I would have to agree with Gee O Dee. Be patient and wait. The time and money combined spent on a conversion does not make sense. These things aren't that expensive at all.

get a 4x4 and dont look back. i got a 2wd because it was my only option (civic blew up, had to trade my yamaha R6). fast forward a year later, im looking to sell or trade my 2wd xj for a 4x4 in febuary. 4x4 is not necessary to a limit. ive done alot of trail riding in my 2wd, little mud and only been in sugar sand twice. it faired ok. but without 4wd, ive been missing out on alot of fun. i found myself saying alot "if only i had 4wd..."

hold out for a 4wd. you want the option of low range for climbing obstacles.
doing a 4wd conversion is quite simple, but without a matching or near matching year donor vehicle, can make things difficult.
yeah, you could piece things together, but that's where it can get expensive.
just be patient, you will find what you're after.

Or a not so known member... Me
It cost me about $1,000 in just 4wd parts.... I would say that my whole project which is still not done cost me about 3k (lift and 4x4).
But at the end of the day when you can tell somebody the kind of work you put into and $ it makes you fell crazy good. But it aLl depends on how much you like your MJ/XJ and the kind of time and $ you are willing to put forth.
A 2wd even with an open diff can go alot more places then people think it has ALOT to do with the driver.
This will help you with what a locker is:

when I see people saying this I feel so fortunate to of gotten such a solid rig for $240.
I think it could be done for under 300 with the right searching, or sell current for a 4x4 already as said.
is it a manual 2dr sport by chance :P ? those things haul *** without the 4x4 weight.
