Default 4x4 question

i bought my Jeep in November ( i love it) Its a 1996 Jeep grand Cherokee Limited 5.2 ltr. 210000 km.
I asked the mechanic (who did the safety certificate on the jeep) about the 4x4. The jeep was in 4h when i got it. He told me to jus leave it where it is because it wouldnt hurt anything. My question is what do i have to do to take the 4x4 off?
The 4x4 lever has a 4 high then a neutral then a 4 low,
it is just a pull up lever, but i have been scared to move it because i do not know the proper way to do so, i never received an owners manual with the jeep but i have ordered one off ebay, i can take a pic of the lever if it is necessary, any help is appreicated.
thanks,
Chris

I think he has the full time 4wd case (np249) since he mentioned no 2wd..
IF it is the 249 your only option for daily driving is to keep it in 4hi.

Np249 info:

ya thats weird. part time would be bad because your tires wouldnt be able to skip at all on dry pavement which is bad. full time 4X4 is fine to run all the time but it will put wear and tear on your rig and MPG's!!!!

you put your jeep in neutral and not moving, then move your 4X4 lever back past the Neutral tcase position then to 4X4 low but I never use mine
