Never done it but maybe the C4/Dana 20 combo out of an early Bronco could work.

Don't be stupid. Only other engines allowed in a Jeep is a Chevy.

If you go ford you will have to make your own motor mounts maybe trans too.For that much work i would skip the 302 and get a 351w efi out of a truck more power and not that much taller.Trans depends if you want a over drive or not you can go c4 c6 aod e4od.Tcase again you have a lot of options best would be a np205 or a dana 20 or maybe dana 300.If you want a easier v8 swap they make kits to put a 350 or ls in the xj.

I may do it down the road with a different xj if I could find a shell or one that isn't running

Either way get a efi ford small block they have a roller cam from a factory. If you use a truck motor and keep the whole front drive you can add a onboard air compressor to it easy http://broncoair.com/onBoardAir.php or if you don't want ac you can do onboard air also.
