Is $6,000 for a used XJ too much?

As stated, deals do pop up, but they're few and far between, and IF you get lucky, ****** it up quick, or someone else will, LOL

I was looking around on CL this AM, and saw a bone stock, 99 XJ, clean, but almost 200k miles...asking price was 7k. KBB places the value, loaded with all the bells and whistles, in top condition, at $3004....see the disconnect here?

Sad thing is, someone will probably pay it.

Don't ask, LOL...they definitely command a premium as well. Older YJ's are around the same prices...anywhere from 5-10k, stock. Modded, sky's the limit, LOL

But seriously, that's what you have to think about: Is it worth it to you.

Exactly. The low priced ones are the ones you don't want, haha

I guess I don't mind shelling out $6k on a vehicle if it will last me 2-4 years without any major headache. I bought a used 1998 Grand Cherokee a few years back and it was pretty awful. It was a jeep that wasn't a jeep.

Well hopefully in a few weeks, I'll be updating my profile here with a nused XJ photo.
You still haven't provided anything close to the minimum information required to answer your question.

Where are you?

How many miles on the Jeep? What options? 4WD? Auto? Mods? Rust?

A TJ was my first Jeep. Love that thing... :')

Honestly, I haven't even looked. I'm looking at the Cherokee because it has more room than a Wrangler. I wouldn't mind a truck but the XJ have everything I need at the moment (i.e., not too big, some storage space, 4wd, reliable engine, etc).

What state are you from tho ?Honestly i wanted a xj but at the time they was still new ish and priced hight,So i bought a beater f250 and said ill drive it tell it dies then get a jeep.Well 6 years later the beater won't die and a i kinda want a zj now to be different. So unless you need a car right now take your time look around or even out of state if your willing to go get it.You can use http://www.searchtempest.com/ to search all of craigslist in the usa it makes it easier then picking a state and then a city.

I'm in TN. Most of th XJs are 400+ miles away in IL, OH, Canada! The ones closest to me tend to project vehicles or ones that need some major fix.

I haven't looked into Fords but I'll have to start looking at it as an option.

Iv have a ZJ (ZG in AU). They have some up graded parts but I didn't like mine. Working under the hood was a pain. Just to change out the plugs was an ordeal! I'll never buy another GC. Maybe it was just mine but it used to give me such headaches.

If you're in TN, then no, $6,000 is not normal. It would need to be in exceptional shape with new-ish tires and well-done mods that you would have done anyway, and the seller would have to be someone you trusted knew what they were doing.

$4500-ish for an unmolested 98-2001 4x4 auto with about 200k on it is what you should expect. Less if it's got a roughcountry lift on it with 33s and cut fenders and rhinolined exterior. More if it's got an old man emu lift with 31s and JCR bumpers front and rear. Dailies are worth more than toys, imo.

Where are you looking that you have to go 400 miles away? There's like 30 on Craigslist in Nashville alone. Looks like about twice that in Knoxville, but only a dozen or so in Memphis.

Thanks for the links. I saw those yesterday in my search. Yeah, the longer I search, the more I'm finding ones (that meet my needs) for less than 6k, which is good

I would pay less for a WJ. IMO they are much more plentiful and in less demand. Here, they are about half of the price of a pretty XJ.
