84 cherokee XJ w/2.8L V6 should I swap to a 4.0?
Hi I just got an awesome deal on 1984 Jeep cherokee with the 2.8L V6, it was free! from a family friend. anyways I know nothing about these jeeps. I use to own a 1998 wrangler with 4.0 and I loved it! the jeep was a tank. now i have this project in front of me and im stuck I dont know weather to piece back together the motor i have in it? or if i should scrap it and install a 4.0? I dont even know if i can swap a 4.0 into this jeep or even how to start. also the family friend who owned the jeep before me said it has a buick V6 in it so im also worried that its a swap to an unkown year model engine that i dont even want to mess with. I know for sure i would love to have a 4.0 again im just worried that i wont be able to swap one into this jeep. if anyone can tell me if i can make the swap or give any advice on this jeep it will be welcomed!

I agree. Lots of differences under the hood including radiator mounts and front header cross member, hood latch and a few more things. Cruiser is right a 3.4 Chevy would be the direction you should go. Lots of go fast parts for them too

Things to look for is a complete motor with brackets and get all associated wiring that goes with it. Motor mounts should bolt to it. If you have smog laws in your state, check with them first

There are alot of reasons not to do 4.0 swap. Stay with the GM 60deg v6 engines for a simple swap to gain limited power over the 2.8. Front drive shaft is weak on the 84 thru 86 (stickin a can unit). As mentioned mounts, xmission plus lots more. The 4.0 is a great engine for the xj but keeping it as a 2.8 grocery getter is what the remaining 2.8s are good for. See my post under original 2.8 owners.
