if the bottom of the rear pumpkin is flat, then it's a C8.25
if the bottom of the pumpkin is round, it the dana turdy five.

man 00, 01 hate everywhere..

well lets say this. what are you going to use the jeep for? as a 2001 driver myself AND! my sister has a 97 whos home alot. we both just need a small SUV to get arown for school.. and like any jeep or car. it has flaws.. both the 97 and 01 theres no lies BUT! if you need a truck to get you arown in life there all mostly the same..

i worked at a HIGH! vol jeep dealer and the probs that are cherokees have are nothing! like some of the other chrysler jeep dodge cars..

like befor what are you going to use the jeep for? just need something to get arown? just fine something youll be happy with. and in the end thats all that matters

There's no 00-01 hate... we just know the flaws. Basically the later year the cherokee, the more chrysler it is. There's nothing saying you can't put a cast iron head and high pinion front axle in an 00-01, then you just gotta deal with the extra emissions stuff.

 

Daily driver and hauling the kiddies. My problem with the 00-01 models is the headcrack issue. I dont want to sink a bunch of $$ into a vehicle only to have to replace a head in x amount of miles, the other reason is the ones that fall in the milage and condition are in dealer posession and they all think the 00 and 01s come equipped with gold dust in the floorpans! Also Im finding a lot more of the 97-99 models closer to home that meet the criteria of my search

 

have a 00 myself... friend has the 01... he has all the electronics where I don't ... neither of ours have trouble with the heads... his is at 200k on the original head... I have 114k on mine with not any trouble... I have no real accessories, to the point where I am surprised that I have a/c and power mirrors. 00 and 01 have three cats so it's a bigger hassle but no real power loss that i have noticed compared to the other years. I would go with the 00 if it has less miles and less electronics but that is just me and my bare bones approach.

 

Well That's not ENTIRELY true... there was a power loss of around 15 hp starting in 99, which is why they updated the intake manifold, to get some of that power back. If you look at yours it's thick and curved, where as the older ones were narrow and square. That's why a 99+ intake is a good upgrade for 98 and older jeeps, and there's no upgrade like that available for the 00-01.

well when you go to look at the truck ask if any cooling sys maintenance has been done if its a truck with nothing done.. it wouldint sound to good to me.
but if its has a lot of maintenance down, i would feel good buying that truck..

i love my 2001. i put my jeep though a lot since ive had it. if you do all of the maintenance it need when it needs it, it will last just like any other xj

 

ive got an 00 and the only issue ive ever had with it are the window switches not working, also never had to deal with the cracked head, i think everybody makes it seem worse than it actually is, it doesnt just crack for no reason, ive overheated mine once, and i drive the hell out of it and im at 130k and ive got no problems, as long as you dont let it overheat than you are fine, it only really cracks with heat, and the coil packs are nice i think, you never have to worry about it being out of time, you cant get water or anything in the packs and they last about 100-150k miles, and when the go bad you buy a new one plug it in and bolt it down, simple, and the low pinion front diff, you arent gonna notice any extreme angles with it till you go to like 8 or 9 inches, its a cv shaft for one so it can handle more than a regular ds, and two ive never had any problems with ground clearance, the front of the diff on the high pinion is the same height from the ground as the low pinion, just that there is maybe 3 or 4 inches more to it so not really a big difference

yeah i agree i own a 2000 classic with 141k on the clock drove it while at 260+ and have had no head problems. like the previous post say if you do regular matenience to it it will last just as long as the others years of the cherokee. the 2000 and 01 also have better manifolds on them as well. i would go and buy my truck again cuz ive had no problems in the year plus that ive owned it. ive driven it pretty hard tons of times and starts up just fine every single day

 

I have a 97 with 156000 on her and she runs great have had the normal wear and tear issues.....nothing major and easy to fix and maintain
