I've seen a lot of write ups on the later model XJ's needing a SYE with pretty much any lift height. I put on a 3" Rusty's with 31" tires and I just ordered my SYE to make my pool 'lil XJ drivable again. Chances are you'll need to add that to your budget. Just food for thought.

how is your xj not driveable after a 3" lift...my old '98 xj had a 3" rustys all i did was a t-case drop and it was perfect...on my new one it has 4.5" with t-case drop and degree shims and its good so far...

Because every XJ is different.

When I first put my 3" lift on my XJ, I had very, very minimal vibes and never worried about a t-case drop or SYE until I went to 6".

A lot depends on your tranny and T-case. Auto is longer than the AX-15 and NP242 is longer than the 231. If you have both, your drive line angle is going to get steeper, quicker. I have a 98 with the AX-15 and NP231, and when I first put my lift on, it netted about 4.5in and the vibes weren't bad at all. Its settled to about 4in now and I rarely notice it. My dad had one with a 4 speed auto with the same lift and it had more noticable vibes, but not undrivable by any means.

Either way, every jeep will react a bit different. Most jeeps are fine without a SYE if you stay under 3.5 in.

How is that a waste of money? Are you one of those people that thinks a t-case drop is a fix? If so you are sadly mistaken. A t-case drop only masks the vibes while killing your u-joints and motor mounts. Its a "temporary fix" at most.

I said to each his own because one day you'll want a bigger lift. And then depending on what kinda of sye he got, he'll need a longer drive shaft. A sye for a 3" lift is a little extreme, don't ya think?

Not if you have vibes. I have seen cherokees with a 2" bb need a sye. A sye at 3" is not all that uncommon.

im at 3" and i havent needed anything, when i go to 5" i might do a TC drop and shims, i wouldnt do SYE for a while. U-joints are cheap anyway lol

^ yep. Thats why I said to each his own, if you wanna buy one now. lift it. Buy another. Be my guest. Its your money not mine. And if the OP wants to save some money for those sexy new tires to go along with the lift he might want to save some money. A tcase drop isnt a bad as every says it is. Same with blocks. I dont like 'em and I choice not to run them. But they're really not that bad. So..

Lengthen it? The way I've seen to lenghten them is buy cutting and welding. Is that is or is there different ways?

Mine came with a 3inch Rustys kit .I put in 4 degree shims and the vibe cleared up.
