My friend had his BMW 3 series straight piped and it's not obnoxiously loud, but it's a nice low sound that can be heard and appreciated. Would I get the same results if I straight piped my '00 XJ?

Don't run straights. Go for flowmaster 44 if you don't want to loud. But if u want to intimidate everyone around you go for flowmaster 10 those are crazyi want to get one for my self.

a muffler shop on Line or AutoZone. You will need the center inlet and ofset outlet and both ends need to measure 2.25 not 2.5

If you want a good setup that will add a performance gain, I HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest going through the vendor Mudfrog. I bought my Flowmaster Super 44 and high flow cat from him (although you may want to avoid the cat... I dunno if your 99 has the dual cat setup and is all touchy about swapping anything). I also bought his 2.5" mandrel bent pipe. I LOVE THE SETUP. Great tone, no rasp, feel the difference especially with a bored throttle body (if interested, hit up thexjfiles. I bought one from him, top notch stuff.)

My $0.02 lol.

Back pressure is bad, you don't want any.
