If I were going to diesel swap a XJ, I'd like to see if a Detroit Diesel 453 T would work. 2 stroke diesel FTW!
I think their has to be a slight change up in the mounts for an XJ. Most vehicles have to have a body lift to clear the turbo on a 3.9, then again most don't know the exhaust manifold on a B series engine is symmetrical so you can move the turbo down 2" and forward 4" on a 5.9 or down 2" on a 3.9 or 3.3. Personally I'd try the 3.3 swap instead of the 3.9.

Yeah 4BTs in XJs, need some lift due to the sheer height. OM617s can go in stock with lift (sorta) or modify the oil pan. A big problem is front-sump design.

Someone DID stuff a Detroit into an XJ, I believe it was a 3-53N they put turbo parts on. Pile of lift, D44/D60 I think, and the ugliest ****ing cowl hood I have ever seen! No way in hell will a 4-53T fit in an XJ lol

Vw swap would be great if it had any real power. The merc swap would be the way to go. Parts=$$$$
