Default Am I crazy buying a 30 year old Jeep XJ?!

As a city dweller, I havent owned a car in over 20 years, but have decided to bite the bullet, buy a cherokee and join the street parking dance lifestyle.

I may have found a pretty clean looking 91 limited and was wondering if im just asking for trouble. I read the So you wanna buy a cherokee faq and it said dont worry about the year, but is that still the case?

Is it taboo to link to the car and get peoples advice on it?

Thanks!

Newbie

As long as it's cancer free, still totally worth it IMO. Parts are relatively cheap and readily available for the most part, and the platform is durable and reliable.

I wouldn't buy any 30 year old car and expect it to be a daily driver TODAY. There is work that is going to need to be done to it, but once you work through the neglected maintenance issues, fixing the small things, you'll have an amazing vehicle. Parts are inexpensive, and readily available, modifications are plentiful, and you'll have something awesome.

This is what the ad reads:

"1991 mint condition Jeep!

A friend of mine got this in california and drove it cross country and didnt want it anymore when she got here so I took it off her hands. The car runs and startes with out any problems. I have all the reciepts from every single time its been to the mechanice as well.

The reason I am selling it is that the brake booster has gone bad (well at least that is what I think is wrong) and sadly I don't have the time or money to replace it so I need to get it off my hands until I can afford to own a car again.

There is not a single tear in the leather seats, the tires are in good condition, the 4x4 works great and the engine is strong and has never overheated on me and there is not a single bit of rust on this car. I love this car and I wish I didn't have to sell it."

If they want anything less than $5000, BUY IT. a brake booster is a half hour job, that is CLEAN. anything under $10k I would still buy it, but I would try to get a better price.

The owner said a few "jeep guys" have come by to look at it and pointed to the headliner fabric sagging as a deal breaker.

The fact jeep fans have passed on it is a little disconcerting. I think I can get it for 5k, any advice?

Appreciate it! I hope to be a jeep owner by tonight!

what's their asking price? I was saying, if it's under $5000k, it's an auto buy. if it's over that, but under 10k, I would try to get the price down from their asking price, but I would probably still buy it, I would try to be as close to $5k as possible, that's what it SHOULD be worth, but the car market is insane, and original/untouched XJs are becoming non existent. If it's over $10k.... I'm sure somebody would buy it, just not me.

Sagging headliner is just par for the course, don't know of any that haven't sagged that haven't been replaced.
