Had some stainless rods from a machine we're rebuilding at work. They're 5/8" thick 11.5" long. They've been machined for their propose in the machine they belong to. Ive been wanting to make some antenna extensions and figured out these would work perfect. All I had to do was drill and tap the holes to a 3/8x24 thread. What do you think??

I have ran the 102 whip without a riser/spring for a long time now... no issues at all... 1.1 SWR on the entire band, I get out really well and hear great... there is more to it than length, the material the antenna is made of, the diameter, all these things CAN play a part

My LTD is close to dash and angled to me, TB can fit legs in fine and still operate the cb too. I use a 4' wilson, added on a spring, off the back door. Mount is reenforced inside the door real well and ground lead, gets all the range I need for pack travel and trail talk. The ZJ has a DC19 under the dash, more cab room on the passenger side and it hasnt clipped knees yet.

Peep... isn't the hatch made of fiberglass? If so then how is the antenna grounded? What do your SWRs look like? They need to be checked with an external meter, NOT THE ONE BUILT INTO YOUR RADIO.

I got one of These at Christmas and it is impressive. They're a bit big for mounting in the Jeep but give good power and cover all the freqs. I haven't sorted my antenna out properly yet so I don't transmit (still got high SWR) but I've heard the USA and Eastern Europe on the 11m freeband freqs already.
There's a smaller version out, but not many details yet apart from This PDF. Which seems to be the V4 in a DIN sized case.
I realise that you'd be going out on a limb to order from Europe but I'm sure there'll be some imports to the USA soon....

if you want something small and powerful the Magnum 257HP is hard to beat...
solid on SSB, just a little bigger than a Cobra 19, does around 60-100 watts (best to keep it at 80 or less) AM, FM, USB, LSB, does around 25.5-29.9???

love that radio.. only problem i have with the 257 is the LCD screen, you can view it at an angle, you have to be dead on looking at it to see it. sucks if you like watching the meter like me LOL, otherwise there bright and badass. buddy has one with a RFX75 kit installed and its a talker.
