as you guys are saying that all these homebrew outside the body snorkels are crap i had to go take a pic of mine and put it on here bc i have had people say that this looks better then the real ones it is smaller 2" and the real snorkel it about 3" at the top where the air ram sites. mine also is a better design under the hood bc you dont have to move anything i went from the back of the box under the booster and out the side panel and put a mission coupling in there just in case i have to remove anything from that area. now i understand that most of you think that this was more expensive from the china one but i bet if i didnt have most of the parts layinga around bc my stepdad owns his own business that you could do it for just under 100$ bc the air ram itself is 45 i think on ebay. anyone have any snorkel ideas pics etc-0424121650a95290884.jpg

Ok mister basher. Abs for your information and not paying 120$ bc I can do the same for cheaper give it. Few weeks it will look good and blow Ur mind then sir I suggest u keep the negativity to Ur self like he said I have a mortgage kids and a car payment so before Ur rich @&% starts downing someone put itself in my shoes I don't have the nicest stuff I live in the ghetto and have 2 kids.

Whoa..Haha. interesting thread. Im 50/50 here. Honestly I doubt many of us will actually utilize a snorkel. Regardless I want one cause they give the Jeep a good look. Im going with one of the 120 dollar ebay ones simply because I haven't ever seen a home made one that hasn't been made out of pvc, and with pvc it just looks cheap. But I do like the idea of building my own things and saving cash. But for me spending a bit more is worth it in the end, espicially for aesthetics

Never said they were crap, just said most look ghetto. Yours is honestly one of the better ines i've seen made of pvc, but again, it'a just not my taste. I have a kid, a mortgage, student loans, and i don't live in the best neighborhood either, and i'm far from rich. Most of the time i'm so po i can't afford the extra "or" to be poor. To be honest, i'm ramen noodle, malt-o-meal big bag of cereal poor. But, i work side jobs and save up my money for my jeep and like i said, i was patient and spent a long time looking and searching until i found my arb for $150. Was it still expensive? To me, yeah, but i also know the quality is far better than pvc and that it wil last longer. Pvc gets brittle and breaks easily when your jeep is using it to lean against a tree or rock. Do that a few times with a pvc snorkel and it will end up costing more to fix it than have the real thing. I'd rather be able to drive away with a little rock rash than a busted homebrew snorkel. Sometimes quality is worth the extra money.

i totally understand where you are coming from i am in the process of buying a house and what it looks like it will tights for the first year. and u have been broke ever since i bought the jeep about 11,000$ into it in just buying it and fixing it up to be lifted correctly and i have only had it for about a year and 2 months. but i never really wanted to buy from china and i actually kinda dont like the look of the real snorkels but everyone has there own tastes and every jeep is different.

I would like to Chime in on this one as its one of the first mods im thinking of doing. While I can easily side with the idea that the PVC can look really ghetto IF done right I can see it looking really well done. I feel that Smelt best showed this point thus far. but you can do different things to hid joints and such. Bondo and some patience go a longgg way in the scheme of things.

It's just a matter or what it is that your goig for. As for myself, I just saw a thread on how to do it. And if I didn't like it, I would just save up my money and buy a astetically pleasing one. But so far so good. And for crying out loud, its a Jeep! lol. I don't want anything that looks too redneck, but in person, it doesn't look bad at all! And I possibly have too many projects going on. The jeep is my DD and I do little stuff here and there while I'm working on building my GSXR, or working on my Trans Am.

well i got the air ram from ebay some of them have free shipping i forget what the price was really but i think it was 39 or 45 bucks. here are some pics of how it was done.
i used 2 inch pve in the whole thing and used 1 45, 2 45's street, 1 90 street, 22 and 2 mission couplings and about 4' of pipe maybe more.
the first pic is of what is under the air ram (the top part)it is about a 4 inch piece at the top and is in the mission coupling and on the bottom is a pvc coupling stuffed into the rubber mission coupling. the reason for this is that the opening on the air ram is too big to fit tight to the 2 inch pvc it is about 2 3/4'' so this makes up the space.
Attachment 112974

now this pic is of the outside parts that go into the fender at the top by the air ram there is another about 2'' piece that goes into the pvc coupling inside the mission coupling. that connects to the top street 45 (same as one on the right of pic) then it comes down the side of the window with about 2 1/2' of pvc pipe then connects to the next 45 street then goes about a foot to the street 90. which i used a 2 1/4" hole saw drill bit to drill into the fender (there is 3 layers to drill through be careful when doing kinda hard). so now going into the truck there is about a 4 inch piece of pvc that goes into the next pic.
Attachment 112975

now this the inside parts that i used i didnt paint this bc i am the only one looking at it and i really dont care also used just regular pipe fittings. connecting to the ouside parts is at the top of the pic with the 45 then going down is about a 3 inch piece to a mission coupling and then about a 6 inch piece to a 22 that goes into the air box that i have rtv'ed on the inside on the air box to seal up. and the reason for the mission coupling is so that i can take apart the two pieces and take out the air box just in case i have to replace something on that side.

Attachment 112986

here is another pic of it going into the air box

Attachment 112988

and now after all of this i kinda went backwards but that was the order of the pics. so i know the first question i would get was what did you do with the hole in the front of the air box. well i took some coil aluminum for like gutters and stuff (u can use other sheet metal but make sure it is thin). and i glued it in place and put a bunch of self tappers in it and sealed it from the inside with rtv. u need to take out the air box for all of this it is alot easier and make sure you dont brake the bolts it sucks getting them out.

Attachment 112989

so this project can take a few days as to fitting everything together making sure u have the right parts and then sanding the pvc to prime and paint and then making sure that all of them fit after paint DO NOT PAINT THE PART THAT GOES INTO THE ELBOWS AND FITTINGS MEASURE AND TAPE IT OFF bc the glue for the pipes will eat the paint and make it all peal.

and also for a bracket on the pilar of the window i used a piece of a pipe hanging bracket and 3 self tappers. only thing i can say about this is dont put the ends at the pillar it will bounce around like crazy and drive you nuts and sure you put the center or close center of the bracket to the pillar and push the snorkel into the screw and pull the bracket tight to the out side and screw it together you can also put a little epoxy into the hole on the pillar that is what you see on the bracket in the pic the third screw is for mounting the bracket to the pillar.

anyone have any snorkel ideas pics etc-0425121627a95301231.jpg

so this is how it all came together i did this last oct. and it has held up to some tree rash but nothing major and my garbage can one day coming home from work lol
