I will say, sometimes homebrew stuff looks ridiculously ghetto, but other times it's good. For a snorkel, I would only homebrew a cowl snorkel. Not all homebrew snorkels look ghetto, but most do. Function over form is good, but only to a certain point in all reality. You can find snorkels on CL, forums, etc for good deals if you're willing to put in the time and patience. I got my ARB for $150 off of CL (guy is also in here), but I had looked for awhile. I didn't want the Chinese one - not 'cuz it's made in China (ARB's are made in Australia) but because I didn't want the jumbled mass of letters on the side of it. My advice, stay with a cowl snorkel for homebrew designs. Otherwise, save up, be patient, and find a good deal.
And as for the "Made in the USA" comment on making a homebrew snorkel out of PVC - good luck finding PVC that's made in the US anymore. I'm all about buying US made products, but unfortunately, the US doesn't make some products anymore. Case in point - the incandescent light bulb. No longer made at all and it was a friggin' American invention. That one still ticks me off.

Thanks for pointing out that PVC made in America comment. As soon as I read it for the first time, I knew it wasn't American made.
That is why that member posted a link to a $120 snorkel from china, but captain America over there is trying to downgrade a good cheap product just because it comes from china. You cant afford a $300 snorkel? A homebrew will cost you nearly the same as that $120 snorkel. Like this guy said theres nothing wrong with homebrew but with a snorkel come on. So yeah to each his own, if you like ghetto lookin pvc running down the side of your xj more power to ya.
Ok mister basher. Abs for your information and not paying 120$ bc I can do the same for cheaper give it. Few weeks it will look good and blow Ur mind then sir I suggest u keep the negativity to Ur self like he said I have a mortgage kids and a car payment so before Ur rich @&% starts downing someone put itself in my shoes I don't have the nicest stuff I live in the ghetto and have 2 kids.

My $120 looks identical to a name brand one. Part of me thinks the same company makes the brand name and knock off, but just puts their brand name on it, instead of the Chinese lettering. And maybe because I'm new to snorkels, but doesn't a cowl snorkel defeat its purpose? What if you're in hood deep water?
Uhh.. I'm pretty sure if we were "rich '@&%s'" we'd own the brand name $300 snorkels lol. I'm a college kid who wants the benefits of a snorkel, but also doesn't want to be made fun of because I made mine at Home Depot.

as you guys are saying that all these homebrew outside the body snorkels are crap i had to go take a pic of mine and put it on here bc i have had people say that this looks better then the real ones it is smaller 2" and the real snorkel it about 3" at the top where the air ram sites. mine also is a better design under the hood bc you dont have to move anything i went from the back of the box under the booster and out the side panel and put a mission coupling in there just in case i have to remove anything from that area. now i understand that most of you think that this was more expensive from the china one but i bet if i didnt have most of the parts layinga around bc my stepdad owns his own business that you could do it for just under 100$ bc the air ram itself is 45 i think on ebay. get some sheet metal or something thin and glue and wrap it around the the edge and self tap scew it on and put some kind of sealer on the inside and the more the better go look at my pics again in my so called write up you should of left that alone bc you need the real snorkel parts to make that part of the snorkel work

U went straight out the back I can't bc like I said my washer bottle and I drilled a hole in the side found a piece of plastic cut a square of it used self tap screws and siliconed the shart out of it the cut a 2 half inch hole on side of box. Now missy issues. Is I can't find a holesaw that will cut through fender and I choose not to use a step bit bc I ain't spending 100$ on one bit!!! Id much rather cut a square and fab. Thin sheet metal with self tap screws and put a round hole in that
