Don't know what you consider an arm and a leg, but if the Warn is all there except for cable and it works it would be a good buy, because they work and are reliable. ( The most important thing in a winch when you need one. )

i use to own the badlands 8k ld winch and had it mounted to the front of my MJ.
it was ok, hadn't really let me down at all...
BUT after not even a year of wheeling and getting stuck to the point that tow strap's weren't cutting it and then i used the winch... (prolly about 30 hard pulls) the case started to fail..
Now since i paid for the extended warranty i got a new one for only $50 and also another 2 year warranty. I will say though, that if i could do it again i would have saved a little more and gotten the XRC 8k winch or a Warn winch isntead...
Your badlands winch WILL FAIL much sooner than either the XRC or a nice Warn winch will. I got lucky because they discontinued the 8K so they gave me a 9k for no extra charge, but i'm still saving up to buy a Warn (lifetime warranty!) So you can jump on the wagon to have a winch sure... or you can buy a decent winch that will last a long time without major issues for a little more cash and have that extra security.

lifetime warranty with a warn i didn't know that ? ya I'm putting the HF crap out of my head being how all my buddies trail rigs are 1 ton and bigger and i will be the only one with a winch i should upgrade to something that will last for sure but you said ''that if i could do it again i would have saved a little more and gotten the XRC 8k winch or a Warn winch isntead...'' so which is it everyone uses the XRC on this forum it seems but theres a big price difference between the two i want to spend 600 tops on a winch but if warn has a lifetime warranty that sounds like its worth a few more bucks do you have to a receipt to have this LIFETIME warranty? if not ill buy my buddies and get all the arts for it

or a little cheaper route
now they are both labeled Limited Lifetime warrenty and 1 year warrenty on the electronics, but warn is an awesome company. Unfortunately the warrenty is only valid to the original purchaser. Though I have had a few buddies picking up the old ones call them up and get a decent parts package and a fair price so they are reasonable to work with.
Trust me, from one jeeper to another. Buy your winch Once and be happy, or take a small set of stairs and then get a good winch.
