I built my crossmember out of 1/4" 2x6 , similar to claytons. The 3 piece design makes it easy to service the trans without having to drop the suspension. I used square tubing for the 3 link mainly because of the cost of dom in my area. I used ballistic joints and tube adapters. If you check out their forum I have a build page on there. Keep in mind Its not going to be cheap. Parts add up quick, $50 + per joint, steel, hardware. Maybe put aside the DIY necessity and buy a complete system.

How good of a welder is your buddy? If you have any doubt at all go to a fab shop. His feelings maybe being hurt vs wrecking if a weld breaks, you have to know that the welds are perfect.

Heres the link to ballistic forum, I don't have a lot of specific measurements and details, but hopefully the pictures will give you a better idea of what to expect. Any questions just let me know! http://forum.ballisticfabrication.co...t=5&p=641#p641

as long as you get good penetration without using too much heat, either a mig or tig would work just fine.
with that said, i would pull out my 250 amp dc stick for this.
